KARACHI: A shopkeeper was shot dead in the Gulbahar area on Monday morning, according to police.

The officials added that Anwar Shah was killed at his shop adjacent to his home in Hasan Colony at 9am.

Gulbahar DSP Aijazuddin said that three men riding a motorcycle pulled up near the shop and fired three shots at the 50-year-old shopkeeper.

Hearing the gunfire, his wife came out of the home and saw the suspects, in early 20s, standing there.

She initially asked them about the firing but finding them holding pistols she ran towards the shop and found her husband lying in a pool of blood, the DSP said.

The officer said the attackers used 9mm pistol in the murder. About the motive for the killing, he said the police were investigating mainly two aspects of the murder — sectarian as the suspects did not take away anything and personal enmity. The victim hailed from Hafizabad, Multan, the officer added.

Firing near prosecutor’s home

The Mehmoodabad police on Monday registered a case against unidentified persons for attempting to murder a public prosecutor who is reportedly pleading some high-profile cases before anti-terrorism courts.

Mehmoodabad SHO Pir Shabbir Haider said that two suspects riding a motorcycle carried out firing near a residence of the public prosecutor, Abdul Maroof, situated in Akhtar Colony. Following the incident, which occurred at 12.40pm, the armed riders sped away, the officer said.

He quoted the prosecutor as telling the police that the incident could be an attempt to kill him as he was pleading some ‘high-profile’ cases.

Therefore, the SHO said, the police registered an FIR (142/2014) against unidentified suspects under Sections 324 (attempted murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on his complaint.

This was the second such incident against the prosecutor. In the previous case, some suspects had attempted to enter the home where Abdul Maroof was residing with his friend but the suspects fled when he opened fire on them.
