KARACHI: A 50-year old assistant professor at Government College of Technology, SITE, was shot dead while a college employee wounded in a suspected targeted attack in Sharifabad on Monday noon, officials said.

The police added that Saifuddin Jaferi and Shakeel Ahmed, college accountant, were travelling in a car from the GCT to their residence in Gulshan-i-Iqbal as per their routine when armed pillion riders attacked them near the Sharifabad underpass.

The wounded were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced the professor dead on arrival, said additional police surgeon Dr Abdul Haq. He added the professor sustained eight bullet wounds. The accountant sustained two gunshot wounds and his condition was out of danger, said the official.

While the victim’s name suggested he was Shia, Mr Jaferi was not, said DIG (west) Javed Alam Odho.

The officer suspected that the murder might be the outcome of some ‘administration-related issues’ in the college. The police had come to know during investigation that academic activities at the college were often blighted by controversies and disturbances, the DIG added.

The bodies of a young man and a woman were found on two different spots within the remit of the Ibrahim Hyderi police station on Monday.

He said that the body of the young man was found at a vacant plot in Ilyas Goth. He was strangled to death.

Later, the body of the woman was found about one-and-half kilometre from the place of the first incident.

He said one part of the body was recovered from the Iqbal Farm in Juma Goth while the second part was found in the Zaman Town’s 51-C area.

The bodies were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.

The police suspected that it was a case of so-called honour killing.
