SUKKUR, July 7: Five persons, including three children, were killed and several others were injured in rain-related incidents as heavy downpour continued for the second consecutive day in the interior of Sindh on Monday.
Faheem Raza, 10, and his aunt, Um-i-Kulsoom, were electrocuted in Subhodero, Khairpur district, when they were switching off a fan.
In Sukkur, one person, whose name could not be ascertained, was killed and seven others were injured in the hilly region.
Low-lying areas were inundated and scores of houses in different localities were washed away as the rains continued. Shadi Shaheed, Adam Sultan, Abad, Rajpari, Loung Fakir and other parts of the hilly area were badly affected by rainwater.
Many areas in the district are without electricity for the last 24 hours.
Sahib Khan Korai, Izzat Khan Korai, Budho Goth, Koro Khan and Nawab Khan villages, a mosque, a high school and a graveyard came under water when a 50-foot-wide breach occurred in the Korai Wah, Ghotki Feeder, near Pano Akil, on Sunday night, due to rains.
Sugarcane, cotton and rice crops standing over 2,000 acres and 33 houses were damaged. The breach was plugged after four hours.
HYDERABAD: Heavy downpour lashed Hyderabad and its adjoining towns for the second consecutive day on Monday, exposing the fragile infrastructure of the Taluka Municipal Administrations in the three Talukas of Qasimabad, Hyderabad and Latifabad.
Civic life remained completely paralyzed as people endured power breakdowns and water shortages. Five people, including four women, were injured when the roof of a house of one Allah Bachayo collapsed in Kali Mori on Monday.
The names of the injured were ascertained as Yaseen, Imam Zadi, Kaz Banu, Sana and Anila.
Drainage water entered the shops and accumulated on main Gulshan-e-Hali Road after a portion of the wall of a nullah collapsed due to rain.
After hectic efforts a temporary wall of the nullah was raised.
The nullah, which was flowing to full capacity due to the rain, passes through the main drainage water disposal centre of the Taluka Municipal Administration, Latifabad.
The Nazim, Latifabad Taluka, Jabbar Khan, said that the situation had become serious and if immediate measures had not been taken a vast area of the Hali Road would have been submerged under drainage water.
It started raining intermittently from 3pm. It was, however, the second spell of rain that began at 5pm and continued for more than 30 minutes, disrupting the routine life in the city.
A visit to some parts revealed that tall claims of the civic bodies that they would control the situation arising out of rains stood completely exposed in view of two days of rains.
DADU: Different areas of the district received heavy rains for the second consecutive day on Monday, claiming the lives of two boys.
Junaid, 8, was killed in the Madina Mosque locality here after a wall collapsed over him. Akram Gadhi, 8, died in the Gadhi locality of Khairpur Nathan Shah taluka in wall collapse.
The catchment area of Nain Gaj in the Khirthar Mountains also received heavy rains and the water level rose to nine feet at the Zero Point.
Talking to this correspondent, the Mukhtiarkar of Johi, Altaf Hussain, confirmed that water flow at Nain Gaj was nine feet.
The telecommunication system remained suspended for several hours. Rainwater inundated roads in over 100 villages of the Kachho belt. Power supply remained disrupted in Mehar, Johi, Sehwan and Ban Saeedabad towns.
MITHI: Rains continued in almost all the parts of the Tharparkar district for the second day on Monday.
The downpour brought a pleasant change in the weather and peasants started preparation for cultivating their lands.
When contacted on telephone, residents of Diplo, Nagarparkar, Islamkot and Chhachhro told this correspondent that their areas received heavy rains on Sunday and Monday.
Power supply to the city remained suspended for many hours.
SANGHAR: Intermittent light rain continued over a scattered area in the district on Monday, suspending power supply to the area.
The irrigation authorities lowered the gauges of the main canals. Crops received excessive rainwater on Sunday and water absorbing capacity of earth was at its optimum.
In taluka Khipro, dehs Fateh Muhammad, Aatna, Malook, Kakeji, Sainda Bhit Bhaiti, Khahi, Hathongo, a considerable loss of crops had been reported.
A farmer, Mukhtar Ahmed of deh Fateh Muhammad said, ankle- deep water was seen in the cotton fields and the villagers were draining it out with the help of tractor-driven pumps. He said that further rain would completely damage the cotton crop.
Nisar Shaikh, an official of the agriculture department said that damp, hot weather was favourable to cotton pest. He said that continuous light rain would cause shredding of cotton flower as the flower contained both male and female parts and the rain would damage its pollen grains.
Apart from that recently sown nurseries of onion, tomatoes and chilies were also damaged due to rain at several places.
In Huthunga, taluka Khipro lightning struck the antenna of a cordless telephone, damaging the entire communication system of Hathunga.
MIRPURKHAS: Heavy rainfall played havoc with the civic life in the district. The residents of low-lying areas were shifting to safer places whereas power failures continued. There was knee-deep water on the streets.
Due to the collapse of sewerage system, the water was getting mixed with rainwater, spreading bad odour in parts of the city and posing health hazards.
Several localities, including Pak Colony, Rajar, Jamnadas, Rehmania and Ghosia were inundated after the rainfall. The residents said no authority was ready to give attention to drain the rain water out.
Some houses collapsed and several persons received injuries in rain-related incidents. The power supply to the city was restored after a 24-hours long breakdown.
NAWABSHAH: The temperature dropped to 30 degree Celsius here on Monday as Nawabshah, Sakrand, Daur and Bandhi towns and other parts of the district received light rains.
