SUKKUR: Heaps of garbage have stockpiled at street corners across Sukkur and polluted environment at public places including commercial/food streets and shopping malls as Sukkur Municipal Corporation sanitation staff continued their strike into the second week on Monday.
The employees have been protesting against non-payment of their salaries for over 12 months.
While citizens have been facing serious problems in walking and driving through roads and streets due to garbage littering their way, unhygienic conditions have provided hatcheries to houseflies, mosquitoes and other insects polluting the atmosphere.
Domestic waste is also being dumped at street corners as no sanitary worker is visiting households to lift it for disposal.
The striking workers have locked the SMC offices, saying that they and their families were starving but elected representatives, including the chief minister, had not been fulfilling their repeated commitments regarding their salaries.
