Islamabad lashes out over removal of Karachi police chief

ISLAMABAD: The federal government in Pakistan on Friday lashed out at Sindh government for removing chief of Karachi police, Shahid Hayat among other senior officers, terming the act as “irresponsible and lax,” DawnNews reported.
In a statement issued by Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government said the provincial government of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was wrong in taking the decision by making court order as an excuse for it.
The statement came a day after the provincial government, acting on the directives of the Supreme Court removed several police officers who had been serving on own pay scale (OPS) including Additional Inspector General Police (AIGP) Shahid Hayat.
“The Sindh government showed irresponsibility and negligence on the issue,” said the statement.
The minister said Hayat was a good police officer and his performance over the 11-month service was plausible.
Rashid urged Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to review the decision.
Meanwhile, Ghulam Qadir Thebo has taken charge as the new police chief for the port city upon the Sindh government’s directives.
Sharjeel Memon refuses to take ‘dictation’ from Rashid
Reacting to Islamabad’s criticism over removal of Shahid Hayat, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon urged the federal government to not intervene in the provincial issues.
“Pervaiz Rashid should refrain from dictating us,” he said, adding that Hayat was removed upon the apex court’s orders.
Without giving any details, the provincial minister said that the centre was ‘confused.’

I can only appreciate the action of government - abiding by supreme court's decision is more important than the interest of a single individual, especially when he is on own pay scale, which is against the law, violation of procedure and failure to follow rules.

PPP governmment following Supreme Court directives -- and sun did not rise from the West.
This is all a farce to remove a AIGP they did not like. This is politics. SG deliberately and broadly misinterpreted the SC directive in order to use it as a cover to remove an officer who is not loyal to them and tends to be more apolotical in his law enforcement duties.
We -- the people -- have to start taking sides for the sake of Pakistan and not for the sake of our party affliations. If there are legal and meritorial justifications, by all means, no one is stopping them. Sadly, there is plenty of objective evidence that indicates that SG is one of the most corrupt and incompetent government in the short history of our nation, so we should never take them on their word on anything.
I lament as I know Dawn never publishes anything I post. May be adding this line, they will.

I don't envy the police in karachi, read that 25% of the city is under ttp control , and gangs and crimminal organizations have influence through out. Not sure if Islamabhad has right to remove chief but someone must be willing to face the wolves in the streets.

The Govt. of Sind has the capability to scrutinize the officer serving under it better than the man sitting in Federal Capital. The Information Minister's statement was not worthy to call for. It was direct interference in the Province's Affairs.

I do not understand why these status quo politician do not spare lives of the people of Karachi. When there is any honest and efficient officers come to command the city, these people make hurdles in their work. I lament the city's situation may not come to normalcy in near future.

UMMMMM!!! Its smells something else. Its something to do with that targeted operation in Karachi. Its PPP`s stronghold in Sind is getting affected somehow, maybe PPP`s are being killed, for example: Lyari`s cleanup whole bunch of terrorists/criminals/bandits/murderers/extortionists etc. are/have been killed, so PPP has to come up with some sort of covert thing, it couldn't oppose this cleanup openly, so they get it done through the courts system. So we have the results before us. Time to celebrate!

@jasim khan I agree with you, there should not be any discrimination for spending government money to build new infrastructure or basic needs of people. That is the reason we last East Pakistan and now there is same situation in Balochistan, and then we balme foreign governments that they are inter fearing in it. we moved away from original topic I believe provincial government did it right to remove Police officer per Supreme Court orders and center government should not put their leg in it.

Since when did PPP started acting onany county's directives? They are misinterpreting it and using it as a cover for removing a professional police officer. This was done only to clear the way for the PPP and MQM alliance.

Surprisingly, The Sindh Govt has changed Captain in the middle of Karachi Operation... It shows the sincerety, if any, of this government in restoring law & order in Karachi or perhaps it has become hostage to its coalition partner.
Given the track record of Zardari's PPP Governemnt in center or in Sindh, these people can do anything. In the past, Asif Zardari hugged "Qatil League" and gave it Deputy Prime Minister slot to prolong his governemnt burying any remote possibility to identify or arrest the killers of Benazir Bhutto.
Now after removal of IG Shahid Hayat as Karachi Police Chief one can see unbridled target killings, extortions and encroachments.

@Sannam Jan Sindh govt could easily have filed a review petition in SC but it did not do so and removed Hayat as he was desired to be removed by vested interests who don't want
the targeted operation to succeed. Taking refuge behind court order when the action is found suitable is and has been the policy all along. Many..many court orders are not
implemented....specially the repeated SC orders for depoliticizing the police force. What about these defaults...Sharjeel Memon saheb ??

Najam Sethi in his talk show stated that the police chief was removed as he eliminated and arrested many PPP and MQM gangsters which was not appreciated by the ruling party and its partner.

Ok it is Sindh's right to remove an efficient police officer. The next step should be to expect Sindh to bring its house in order without him, other wise remove the " Chief Minister" later on not providing security to a 20 million City.

@Youth Are you serious? what has Sindh CM has achieved so far? he has had continuous spell of almost 6 years, but there is hardly any change in life of Karachi. There is a need to change for better, energetic and strict CM, who can deliver. Current CM is loyal to the boss, but extremely incompetent.

Compare the situation of Lahore Vs Karachi including social amenities, law and order, rule of law and corruption. And now the removal honest officers in the Sindh Police especially Shaid Hayat, Munir Shaikh and Khalique Shaikh and few more!.

I have always disliked this Punjab centric politics and find the Sheriffs to be without depth and even illogical at times. However I have to say no matter how many flaws I see in them they have been a significant improvement over the last government and I have to agree with Pervaiz Rashid's assessment of the Sind government's decision, actually I would go a step further they are negligent and irresponsible not only on this issue but in general and when it comes to incompetence no one can compete with them..... Anyone who take their ethnic glasses off and can see past their nose knows reason behind this decision, it is not only negligent but criminally negligent and the benefactors of this decision are obvious.....
