SWABI: Gunmen killed an assistant sub-inspector near his house in Gadoon Amazai early on Saturday.

Laiq Shah posted to the Mardan Police Lines was in his Malikabad village on leave. Laiq Shah’s father Rehman Shah told the police that his son was gunned down by unidentified people when he was on his way to a mosque near his house for Fajr prayer. He said he’d found the body near the Malikabad van stand.

The complainant said he or other members of family had enmity with anyone. The police registered a case against unidentified killers and began investigation.

However, no arrests were made by the night.

CONVOCATION: The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology is slated to hold its 18th convocation on campus on Tuesday (June 3).

This was decided during a meeting of the institute’s convocation committee here on Saturday.

Pro-rector (academic) Professor Fazal Ahmad Khalid, who chaired the meeting, said BS, MS and PhD degrees would be given to successful students during the convocation, while medals would be awarded to high achievers.

“We have formed various committees for the successful holding of the event and that they are supervised by the rector and pro-rector of the institute,” he said.

Professor Fazal said the convocation, open house, career fair and induction of fresh students were part of the event.

He said members of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan, board of governors, parents of graduates, and government officials would attend the convocation.

PROTEST: The relatives on Friday brought the body of a man, who was allegedly killed in an encounter with police in Chota Lahor tehsil, outside a local court to demand justice.

Sher Alam, father of the deceased, handed an application to additional district and sessions judge Manzoor Qadir for justice.

He rejected the police claim that his son, Idrees Khan, was killed when he opened fire on police during a raid in Beka village the other day.

After getting assurance from the judge that they would get justice, the protesters dispersed, taking the body to home for burial.While police said Idrees Khan was killed and his colleague, Rahid Ali, was seriously injured, when policemen retaliated after being fired upon by the two during a raid in Beka village. An official said the raid was made to arrest Idrees as he was wanted to police in two cases of snatching Rs26,000 and a rickshaw from Waqar Khan, and shooting and injuring Yaseen Khan of the same village when he resisted their bid to rob him.
