PESHAWAR: About two dozen victims of Taftan tragedy were laid to rest on Tuesday in their native areas after their funeral prayers were held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

Taftan is located near the border with Iran, some 700 kilometres southwest of Quetta.

A majority of the victims hailed from Kohat and an announcement was also made to observe three days of mourning.

Out of the total 24 victims of the Taftan tragedy, 11 were buried in Kohat, while 13 were laid to rest in various areas of Orakzai. The victims also included women and children.

Due to funeral prayers, the Hangu road was closed to all sorts of traffic.

Six injured in Sunday night’s incident, including four women and one girl child, were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar. All the wounded were said to be out of danger.

On June 8, twenty-four Shia pilgrims were killed and several others were injured in suicide attacks and firing at two hotels in Taftan.
