Dr Abdus Salam: The documentary
Both Salam's personal life and his contributions to the world of theoretical physics tell a remarkable tale.

August 1, 2014
Omar Vandal and Zakir Thaver met in college, and after many discussions on Pakistan and its achievements, they developed a great interest in the life of the country's only Nobel laureate Dr Abdus Salam.
Their interest turned to passion and they spent the last few years researching Salam, whose "personal life and his contributions to the world of theoretical physics tell a remarkable tale," Vandal and Thaver said.
The video below features some of the unseen footage, interviews and archival pictures used in their documentary which is scheduled to be released soon.

Indeed Professor (Dr) Abdus Salam should have been the pride of Pakistan , but Alas, he was not to be. Being an Ahmedia, he was disowned and even his grave was not spared to remove his religion and his being a Pakistan national. That is not how nations treat the heroes of the country. He was not only a brilliant scientist but also super fine human being.

It is time to celebrate Abdus Salam's legacy in Pakistan by declaring January 29th each year as "Abdus Salam Day". Like other days in honor of national heroes of Pakistan this would not be a day off from school for children of Pakistan. I envision that all school & college children on this day would be encouraged to display science projects all over Pakistan. There would be competitions in different categories of various science subjects and prizes, trophies scholarships in honor of Abdus Salam would be awarded to the winners.......

Every one knew him and referred us as Salam's boys or Salam's paisano ( countrymen ). We did not, as a nation gave the man respect he deserved. Only reason, he was a Ahmadi. Salam is great. World recognizes him. But his own nation is not willing to take pride in this talented and gifted son of Pakistan. Why? Only because he belongs to Ahmadyya jama'at.
Nation which disowns their heroes due to petty prejudices, can not expect to create more heroes. In fact, they tell their yougsters that your great achievements bring you naught and matter nothing to give you respect and honour in the eyes of the nation. So,they demotivate them to work hard and to do great works. This is suicide for national development. I hope and pray that good sense prevails. Let us take pride that a Pakistani made great contribution to Science.

Extremists are few but get away with murder! Laws in Pakistan should be obeyed and strong judges should make it happen. People harming or attacking minorities should get severe punishments. I grew up reading Dr Saheb Marhoom's lectures and writings. Being an Ahmedi kid I was really proud of him and often idealized him. One thing I want to say about him. Most people consider him a great scientist. Which is correct and doesn't need any further proof. But the more important side of his life and achievements comes to light when we read about dozens of possible solutions to eradicate poverty, hunger, and ignorance that he presented to the entire world. He was a master planner for the entire humanity with a very sound and scientific mind. That is not common among the scientists. It is a very rare combination. I am sure those who know who he was will agree and can further elaborate this aspect of his life.
Thanks to those who envisioned this great project and then accomplished it successfully with tireless hard work.

Our ungratefulness is not limited to Dr Salam. We dishonored Dr Qadeer Khan, Dr Mubashir Hassan, and several other scientists. In these cases there isn't even the excuse of being Ahmadi and mulla having their way. Dr Mubashir Hassan was arrested by a dictator (Ziaul) and remained behind bars for 7 years while Dr Khan was placed under house arrest by another dictator (Mush). The problem has more dimensions than Ahmadia-mulla problem. Atleast Dr Salam didn't have to face incarceration.

Thank you Mahnoor for the story. It is good but I am afraid with the quality of the documentary. The frames are not good, The whole camera is shaking at Hoodbhoy and Salam's sons comments. It lacks uniformity ( of frames) while shooting talking heads. If it is raw footage than it is fine but in case of finished product, the video need more quality.
As far as the stills are concern, Azim Kidwais book on Salam is a beautiful Album of his memoirs.
I think Dawn should highlight another documentary of Salam too which was made by Pilgrim films
Any way, in this documentary, I am looking forward to see the salam dream of unification, his hard work for science in the third world and his accounts with Pauli and P A M Dirac, his work on peaceful atomic policy and establishment of SUPARCO, and yes, his remarkable work on renormalization in Physics.

Abdus Salam's religious beliefs and political ideology is completely irrelevant to me and maybe to majority of the Pakistanis, but for the sake of the argument, I would really like to know what exactly he had accomplished for the nation of Pakistan, for getting Noble prize does not mean one cared about the nation. Others have won the prize too fro unusual reasons - like Obama - not really an intelligent choice? The Pakistanis should not be sent on guilt trip regarding Abdus Salam, for one only deserve respect and status in the hearts of the nation when one accomplishes some thing extraordinary for the nation and the people. Again, we need to examine from the nationalist point of view as what did and what didn't Abdus Salam accomplish for the nation instead of using him for political or ideological reasons.?

It should be job of the Government to recognise and acknowledge its National Heroes irrespective of their faith and religious belief. It's a shame that no government in Pakistan has given The World's Great Physist his due honour and place as a National Hero.
There should be scholarships for science students, university, research centres, and a road in every big city of Pakistan after his name to honour him in a most appropriate manner. He is pride of Pakistan and Pakistanis should be proud of him.

From my college days i have admired Dr Abdus Salam, my fellow old Ravian as a great physicist. He was the beacon of light and a motivator for so many budding young Ravian scientists. Above all a great human. He will always be remembered as the first Pakistani to receive the Nobel Prize. That will always be his place in history and no other Pakistani would be able to claim this. His religion and believes are his personal matter and I never judge people based on that. That job of judging people belongs to the Creator and He knows the best how to do it. I salute him what he was - agreat physicist and a human being...

Although belief matters, not for Pakistan but for ISLAM. But at least, he was dressed in National dress while receiving Noble Prize.

@kala Ingrez
May be you are being naive. The real issue is the insult heaped on him and his community by the establishment for being a Ahmadi. Let us for the moment assume Mr. Salam was a Sunni Muslim. How would pakistani establishment treat him?

He was a Qadiani...doesn't change the fact that he was a great scientist and we should be proud of him as a nation.

He has got recognition by Pakistan but not the government and that will be rectified when genuine democracy comes in, as per PTI march, as then leaders wont come in through wheeling and dealing for themselves but represent the sentiments of the people, which in this case would be to recognize him for his achievements not to deny it for any other reason.

Kudos to the Producers! Yes we are all guilty for looking the other way when "INJUSTICE" was being carried out against the "Ahmedis"! Today, Pakistan is paying the price when Violence and Extremism has pervaded the entire society and everyone is being "persecuted!

Dr. Abdul Salaam will be remembered with great honor and respect in my heart, InshAllah.
I heard him speak at a science conference in Austin, Texas. I was overwhelmed with his humble personality and scientific contributions to humanity.

I salute to dr salam for his great achuevement,he is the only name on Nobles list from our great country. Many more pakistanis can excel if wegive up sectariandivide.as quaid azam said youn are free to go any place ofbworship of your choice.this country is not created for religious fanatics.
Unfortunately quaids early demise left this nation it in orphanage.
god bless Abussalam .Pakistan zindabad

Nations who don't honor their heroes are forgotten and removed from the chronicles of history. As Hasan Nisar once put it, there was only one great scientist that Muslim world produced in last 500 years and that was Dr Abdus Salam and how ironic that us Pakistanis don't even recognize him as Muslim. I am what I believe I am and there is no one in this world who can tell me otherwise! Dr Adbus Salam believed he was a Muslim and that's all what he needed to be treated like a Muslim. Shame on us!
