KARAK: Local ulema and elders ‘banned’ here on Tuesday movement of young women outside their homes without the company of male relatives and said the violators would be fined and socially boycotted.
A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Gurguri Islahi Tanzeem chaired by its former president Nasrullah Khan. Local ulema, elders and members of the committee were in attendance.
The participants expressed concern over increasing drug addiction among youth and said that there would be complete ban on sale of drugs in the area. The meeting warned the drug traffickers to quit the illegal business or face dire consequences.
On the occasion, two drug sellers decided to quit the illegal and unethical business. The participants extended support to the committee’s struggle for drug-free society.
The meeting also decided that in case of theft in the area the committee would suggest severe punishment and fine for thieves. It was also decided that the affected family would be compensated by the relatives of thieves.
The participants demanded of the police and district administration to extend support to the committee for implementing its decisions.
FUNDS RELEASED: Funds meant for the parent teacher councils for petty repairs and purchase of classrooms consumable articles have been released to the National Bank which would be transferred to the accounts of the respective councils.
This was disclosed by the district education officer Zahid Rasheed Khattak while talking to a delegation of the local chapter of Tanzeem-i-Asataza on Tuesday.
Mr Khattak said the funds amounting to Rs7.7 million would be transferred to the accounts of PTCs in a week. He asked the primary school head teachers to utilise the money with honesty to resolve the basic problems of schools.
He resolved that the education management would ensure transparency in the funds use.
The meeting was informed that Rs9.5 million had been released for purchase of computers for all high and higher secondary schools.
Tanzeem-i-Asataza delegation assured the district education officer of ensuring utilisation of funds in a transparent manner.

Do these bans have any legal sanctity ? Does this mean that women not attached to any man, are outcasts who cannot work and feed themselves ? Is it not the government job to ensure right to life and freedom of movement for all its citizens, without fear or favor ?

What about the travel of a lone female traveler with a fistful of gold from one corner of the World to another without any fear example that I used to hear when I was a kid. I think that there are signs of reforms coming to Islam as it did for Christianity some hundreds of years ago.

It is the Ulema who ought be confined to the four walls of their homes and only allowed to step outside fully covered in a shroud and accompanied by female relatives. Violators should be fined and socially boycotted.

I respect cultural heritage of any ethnicity but when we claim to be Muslims then our binding force is Islam.
In the time of our Prophet ( PBUH) women went out freely practicing Islamic values they " did not " have to
accompany a male to go out. Hazrat Khadeja Prophet ( PBUH ) wife was a business woman herself.
This ban by Ulema and Leader's is un-Islamic and if they impose that its their ignorance and rigidness which
has no place in Pakistani society, once again some people proved the biggest evil in Pakistan is within us spelled as
ignorance.

If a family consists of a women who is a widow and she has only two or three girls. How is she going to survive. Who is going to run the chores and who will be the bread winner? Lets say one of the daughters wants to work and help the family. What kind of work can she find without education, a house maid may be.
Any ulema or elders care to answer.

Rules and laws are for the people, if they break a slit of it, then these kind of thing happens.But this is no good, if in the case of different circumstance, if someone need to go outside, what should she do, and further local ulma should have to take some condition on it before implement this.

This is just an easy way now a days to get famous within the region. These Ulemuna never raised questions regarding the rights they don't consider to be give to women. It may happened in some remote village of District Karak and has no way representing the whole Karak at all. They are not sincere in intentions, I will ask them to raise questions regarding giving rights to the women Islam permitted to them.

@hope brother u give example of Hazrat Khadeeja(R.A),so it was the start of Islam,and the order of Hijab comes later.our problem is that we use Islam in a way which suit us,it's really dangerous...so please don't say this that parda (hijab) is a culture demand no man its an order of our Allah,and should be all ears to Allah's orders and should try to obey.this is the only way of success. please before disusing any Islamic issue conform it from Ulema 1st and then discus it.Thanks

Wish we all read the full article in which many good and positive things were also mentioned but its a shame that we outline the issue that hurt islam, muslims and our culture.
There may be some background to this decision that are not mentioned but thinking here loud, the women going outside in these areas are not safe.
Everyone posting comments here answer one thing, would you allow your women to go out alone in these areas ??. I wouldnt.

Of course, I would not worry about women leaving home alone anywhere in the world. The only country where I would be worried about the ladies (and men) in my family leaving home alone is Pakistan. I am not sure where you live but no place is safe in Pakistan.

This is always been like that in that part of the country. Not going out with out close male relative is pakhtun culture specially in the villages. With education these things are changing - specially I don't see these burgas any more, burqas are replaced by chadures. In the cities like Peshawar, educated Pakhtun women do go out shoppings and for jobs without "Muhram".

@jj let me tell you by bringing focus on rape in India has forced the govt and the police to bring out changes in the policing and criminal investigations. Govt of India has been forced to bring about new legislation. This is giving women more confidence and they are coming out in open more and more to demand justice and action from the police. Infact many families are now coming out with such cases of rape in the hope they would get justice because of better reporting and legislation. Hence, the rise in numbers that you see all of a sudden in the media.

The people from that part of the country are targeted to change their ways by some people and the mullahs are resisting to the extreme. sory for most of the comments. No one have appreciated the ulema and elders for their efforts to ban drugs and theft in their area but every one is criticising them for baningg women from going outside their homes without a male relative for their safety. Those who are commenting against ulema do not know that the govt has little presence in this area to provide protection to them. There is little presence of police force in the villages and the men are themselves responsible to protect themselves. These ulemas and elders not only ban women from going outside their homes but also fight for their right of honor. Those who are against parda actually want our women to have right to illegal sexual relations by consent as is a practice in western or eastern countries like India.
