QUETTA: A Shutter down strike was observed in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan on Tuesday on the eve of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Bugti's 8th death anniversary.

Shops, markets and other commercial areas remained closed on Sariab road, Double road and other parts of Quetta city.

The shutter and wheel jam strike was observed in Kalat, Mastung, Kharan, Mekran belt and other parts of Balochistan.

Baloch Republican Party(BRP) headed by exiled Baloch leader Barhamdagh Bugti, Jamhoori Watan Party and other nationalists groups had given the call of strike to mourn the killing of Bugti.

"We are thankful to Baloch masses for observing the strike," Nawabzada Jamil Akbar Bugti, the son of Nawab Akbar Bugti told Dawn.com.

Strict security measures were put in place by the provincial government to ensure law and order on the eve of the anniversary.

Secretary Home and Tribal Affairs Department, Akbar Hussain Durrani told Dawn.com that an additional 2,000 personnel were deployed in and around Quetta to ensure peace.

"Mountains surrounding Quetta are strictly manned to avoid rocket attacks on the city," he informed.

The flow of traffic remained thin in Quetta and other troubled parts of Balochistan. However, no untoward incident was reported.

Throughout the day, par-military troops and police patrolled sensitive areas of Quetta to ensure peace in the city.

To pay homage to the veteran Baloch leader, members of the legal fraternity also boycotted courts proceedings in Quetta and other parts of the province.

The Balochistan Bar Association and Balochistan High Court Bar Association had given the call of strike.

Nawab Bugti was killed in a security forces' operation in Taratani area of Kohlu district of Balochistan on August 26, 2006.

Bugti's murder sparked violent protests in Balochistan and life remained paralyzed for more than a week.
