Paresh Rawal, one of the most versatile actors of Bollywood, stated in an interview that many Bollywood films can’t even be compared to Pakistani television shows, let alone Hollywood.
He also said that the success of a film doesn’t depend on the revenue it generates; rather plot and acting hold central importance.
In a candid interview with Ahmedabad Times, Rawal who had been in Ahmedabad for the promotion of his recent film Raja Natwarlal gave a much too honest opinion about the present standard of films, his passion for acting and the question of 100 crore club. He didn’t feel any reluctance in sharing his thoughts about the decline in the quality of films being produced.
When asked whether the audiences are taken for granted, an act highly unlikely in Hollywood, Rawal answered,
“Forget Hollywood, we cannot even compare our films to Pakistani shows. They are far more superior to what we produce here. We need to make some more smart films where we don't take our audience for granted and think that they will not understand what we want to convey. And this is what attracted me to Raja Natwarlal. Con films genre is one genre that hasn't been explored much and there is a lot of scope in this genre.”

He also declared that despite the countless roles he has played, he doesn’t feel he has done everything.
“As long as I am getting good work I'll never feel that I have done everything. The script is always bigger than the actor, and till the time I am getting good scripts, interesting stories and powerful characters, I will continue doing films. It is only when there is a dearth of good stories that an actor's career comes to a standstill, and it's not that it doesn't happen, it happens a lot.”
Responding to the question about famous ‘100 crore pot-boilers’ getting more audience than performance oriented films, Paresh Rawal didn’t hesitate in giving an honest answer.
“The producers, exhibitors of these `100 crore films must be taking into the account the sale of popcorn cola in the theatres! Crossing`100 crore is no benchmark of how the film is. Par main `100 crore' ke bare mein nahi sochta (But I don’t really think about the 100 crore).
Acting is a very organic process for me and as an actor you need to keep evolving and learning throughout your career. There is no certain point where you are complete as an actor. I also try to learn something from every actor I work with. The process should not come to an end.”
His latest film, Raja Natwarlal starring Humaima Malik and Emraan Hashmi is being commended by critics from both India and Pakistan.

Agree. Pakistani TV serials are top class. Our TV serials are nowhere in comparision except for classics like Tamas, Mirza Ghalib etc. The rest are pure junk. We can learn much from the Pakistanis, especially in field of script writing. Ghazab ki scripts hain. Pure class.

The hugely talented Mr Rawal is right about brain-dead Bollywood movies (not all but a huge majority of them) and that TV shows are even worse. But as one of the guys recently pointed out: it is all about commercialization. In India, we made far better shows in 80s with far far less money, now the commericialization has taken over. Another thing is despite being a poor country (by US standards), Bollywood produces films of similar costs to Hollywood (same order of maginitude). Reason? Mafia/black money. This takes Bollywood further away from anything art or artistic.

May be he is true but I never watched Pakistani serials, so I don't know their talent.
I am hyderabadi in INDIA, but what i can tell is Hindi movies are not good compared to our Telugu films. Ours are more talented movies compared to HINDi movies. Also we are the producers of more movies than Hindi films in INDIA. our stars like Mahesh Babu, Pawan Kalyan takes 20 crores for a film and with a population of just 6 crores, the new films are doing business of more than 70 crores. So Bollywood movies are not great compared to Tollywood (Telugu Language) movies. So Paresh Rawal might not see the talent of Telugu and Tamil movies, which have all the credentials of Best stories, directors, Actors and technology to beat Bollywood movies. All most Hindi hits now a days are a remake of telugu movies or of south Indian directors only.

Doesn't everyone know this already? Most (probably all) Indian 'dramas' can't even go one episode without zooming straight in on at least 3 people's faces four times each, along with that annoying noise while they do it.

No doubt about it.
The art circle of Pakistan is dignified and maintains their standard.
There is no sense in 90% Hindi language work because most people who entered the industry have money to invest but no intellect to understand art.They just need return of their investments whichever crude way it is possible.
Best Indian dramas are available in regional languages.
PS:Paresh Rawal is also a BJP Member of Parliament and ardent follower of Mr Narendra Modi.He will play the role of Mr.Modi in the upcoming biopic on the India's prime minister.

@Imtiaz Karim Hunzai It is not simply a question of having talent. We do not gave a successful environment to grow such an industry any more. Similar to why people from India and Pakistan thrive in US, but not in their own lands.
So talented people just move to the environment where their talent will prosper rather than strive to build infrastructure

@Insaan whats wrong with commercialization? Making movies is business. Producers make such movies because people are ready to pay for it. The day people stop watching it producers will also change. The purpose of making movies is making money via entertainment. I will be surprised to see any producer who would like to make movies with the intention of imparting education & money will not be important. In that case open an NGO don't venture into movies. If Bollywood is able to generate millions of dollars & generate jobs with whatever they make I think they are successful whether anybody likes it or not. So called artistic stuff with no or limited commercial value has no takers in the global economy & this is the fact like it or not.

Pakistani serials ARE better than hindi serials. My mother has stopped watching saas-bahu dramas too and is hooked to the new Pakistani channel Zee Zindagi.
The reasons being: Crisp short duration of 20-25 episodes for a serial vs endless twists, loops lengthy hindi series which go on for years. Dialogue delivery is crisp and heart touching unlike some hind serials' amateur acting. Simple clean beautiful makeup compared to garish sets of Mahals Havelis and heavily caked faces of women in hindi serials. My only issue is that a few themes are slightly less liberal than expected. Eg. Fawad Khan of Zindagi Gulzar Hai not wanting his fiance to meet her old friends from college because they are men. Or questioning his sister on coming late back home even though he ALSO is late to return. Would've been nice if the director would've portrayed a liberal hero. But even this show was better than so many hindi shows. Pakistani serials are overall better.

One thing for sure, Bollywood moguls, producers, mega stars are successful in selling make- believe fantasies to downtrodden Indians.

The main reason is that Urdu was banished from India and Hindi could not evolve under the dominance of English language. All modern day great Indian script writers still use Urdu words without knowing Mir and Mirza!!!. On the other hand Bangla has evolved and is a great language loved and spoken with pride.

it's fine if bollywood wants to make masala musicals...but when almost all your films are masala films which requires one to turn his/her brain off when entering cinema is the problem. bollywood needs better writers/directors. they already have great actors/musicians. i feel bollywood is chasing money and in the way is sacrificing the film quality. hollywood has proved you can make great movies that can also generate money for investors. think star wars, the godfather, saving private ryan etc.

@Parul, thanks for your positive comments. As for Zaroon in Zindagi Gulzar Hai, I think you have misunderstood the character. The behavior you cited is exactly what the writer wanted you to see. His hypocrisy is one of the character complexities (flaws?) that Zaroon has. His being liberal or not is dictated by what the story needs and not as an overall strategy. If you watch more material from Pakistan, you will notice plenty of display of "liberalism" as you define it.

Paresh Rawal is one of the most versatile and talented actors and his view that Pakistani serials are superior is a veritable compliment.
His role in the movie, "Ghulam-e-Mustapha", as a villain don and step-father of character Mustapha (Nana Patekar), is especially memorable. And the movie itself was absolutely superb.

Very true. Ask any Tamil, he does not want to speak 'Hindi'. Ask any Sikh, he loves to speak Punjabi. Whose language is Hindi any way ? Indian' elites' speak English, send their kids to English medium schools. It is pretty much same story in Pakistan only difference, a wealthy Punjabi switches from Punjabi to Urdu, if he becomes wealthier next switch is to English. Pakistani Punjabi is a Chameleon when it comes to language. Punjabi is meant for lower social classes, ancient Romans used to call them Plebeians.

Pakistani serials are many notches above the current crop in India. But to dismiss the standard of Indian films as bad, considering only Bollywood would be a mistake.Bollywood is just the Hindi film industry , which could really do with a re-look at the quality of its films. The film Industries in Bengali, Tamil and especially Malayalam have been creating world class movies which have routinely won accolades abroad.
Hopefully, with the competition from Pakistan, we might see a better class of Hindi serials. The terrible alternative , of course, would be that the 'crappiness' of current Hindi serials would spread to the Pakistani Industry.

I totally agree with Paresh Rawal, about the standard of Bollywood movies compared tp Pakistani TV shows. Many a Bollywood movie produced recently is good only for the first 10 minutes, which gives you a fair idea about the movie in question, and helps you decide to stop torturing yourself
by watching "garbage" for the next 2.1/2 hours.

Commercial attitude destroys the art. That's the problem of Hindi TV serials. It's a matter of time before Pakistanis see the money that the producers of these TV serials are making and then, commercial people (who have money, interested in quick profits but no interest in quality) will jump in and start producing TV serials.

Pakistani TV series are great and can earn lot of revenues abroad, but they should stop showing marriages between cousins and relatives. while that may be permissible in the religion, the practice is too unacceptable for people of other faiths. in any case, in-breeding is scientifically not a good thing.

Agreed our runs of 1000 of episodes without any logic.. I have seen some shows on ZEE Zindagi and our Daily shop industry need to learn from the Pak's ..They have limited resourse and they made such good shows in our show we spent lots of money on sets ,costumes etc bit not on story

Its the touch of Punjab, which is and was known as the literary capital of India. The list is endless like Mian Hasan Monto, Premchand, Kishan Chander, Rajinder singh Bedi, Hafez Jalandhari, bhalki, and the folklores of Waris Shah, Bulleh Shaah and that Pakistan being the buffer between India and the countries to its West and added to the cultures of the mainland India got embedded in that place. Watching theiir serials or listening to their music transforms us to the period or relates to our thoughts and imagination. the serials what we watch on the Indian channels run for infinity, the themes have no connect and too cacophonous. The Music director enjoys himself annoying the men folk who helplessly has to endure the torture. Gaudy make up, artificial expressions God only help us. India is a big country, the the Bengali films and the South Indian films do touch the raw nerve at times as these movies engages us. Hindi serials and movies what Paresh is saying is apt

I have not been fascinated by Indian Dramas.& I am not proud of Pakistani dramas being praised across the borders. But one thing that i have noticed during my spree of watching Pakistani Dramas is the fabulous acting and the close to reality story.

Agreed Pakistani TV Serials are certainly better than ours.Classy scripts and committed direction and excellent programming outpaces Indian TV world. We can certainly learn from them. however I would say that our movies are still better.
We should keep furthering the contact in this showbusiness and show the politicians how constructive engagement can help both the countries and suggest a paradigm shift in their mindsets.

Really believe we can make world class art together! Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. There should be a synergy between the artists of these countries. Imagine a film with Indian production and marketing, Pakistani music and soul and a combination of the best actors and script-writers from both the countries. I would die to watch that film! Lakhs of people in India are eagerly praying and hoping for Fawad Khan's success. The audience is sick of being taken for granted now. How long can you watch a 50 year old man in red pants gyrate with a woman half his age? (Salman K). Everything about Pakistani content is REAL and appeals to every Indian everywhere. We welcome these beautiful, real actors to come to India and re-vitalise our industry.

Didnt nasir-ud-din shah star in the pakistani movie "khuda ke liye" ? Doest that make him a person whose running after money. He's a legend. But imagine even that 10% population that didnt know him got to know after watching the movie in pakistan. Same is the case with fawad and ali working in india. Give them credit ffs .
I'm proud of them. Right now we are comparing ourselves to inda. Later on God willing we'll have our own benchmark.
India and pakistan both have amazing talent. We believe it shows in their movies. And they believe it shows in our drama series.

I too go with paresh sir. He is genious and his opinion cannot be questioned. Nowadayas we dont find any attachment to the serials being played as i used to during my childhood days. I remember Buniyaad, Malgudi days, circus, byomkesh bakshi, etc etc. No extra unnecessary music and no fashion parade as we see nowadays in Ekta kapoor mello dramas. Wife and husband having extra marital affairs, wife fighting with in laws etc etc. Nothing that can actually motivate a person to do good work for the society. We learn all negative things and our kids too learn many bad things. In half an hour show 25 minutes is given to advertisement and rest for the serial.
Similarly films also have lost their charm. Too much of unnecessary things and all baseless stories. LAst 10 years only one film i think was good to watch "Chak De" which was a really motivating film. Other film makers just think about money and never about the society.
Its high time for India to improve on this part.

Agreed, but see actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Om puri etc who were purely into art films shifted to commercial movies - it is the audience/cinema goers choice what they like - so the movies are made accordingly.
In Pakistan the audience loves the serials and they have no other choice, besides the actors from Pakistan also are thronging to India in numbers.

@Kranti ....The golden era of meaningful Telugu movies ( 60' to early 70's ) is gone. I am basically a Telugu, but a polyglot. Right now I would rate South Film industry in this order....1. Malayalam 2. Tamil 3. Telugu 4. Kannada,,,,although trash films are produced in all languages, there seems to be more effort in Malayalam to make films on good stories and better scripts.

If you look at the whole film industry in India, Bengalis & Malayalis continue to produce better movies than most of the other languages. Of-late Tamilians seem to be picking up by choosing down to earth stories & better scripts. Hindi / Urdu, Telugu & Kannada movies are going downhill...

It is quite normal for visiting Indian actors and politicians to sing Pakistani praises while on Pakistani soil, whether what he says is true or not . It sounds less convincing when he says the revenues a film generates are less important than the plot and acting . Has he ever worked in a film free of charge because it had a great plot ? Would any producers, directors ,Financiers or even the actors work in a film on the basis of good plot and excellent acting without worrying too much about finances it generates. Most of the Indians seem criticize Indian films just to please Pakistanis. Would Mr. Rawal think of working in Pakistan or would he prefer to work in Bollywood on junk films ? If Mr. Rawal perceptions about Indian films are correct, can he elucidate why so many Pakistani actors/actresses are dying to go and work in Bollywood ?

My wife torchers me everyday by switching on to those daily unending silly stupid (Indian) serials. To avoid this daily punishment I am planning subscribe to Zindagi channel today and hope for the best. May God give her some good sense.
