I believe Pakistan has generally seen more harm then good under military rule. The best two dictators were Ayub and Musharraf, and the worst two were Yahya and Zia.

Economic History of Pakistan is evident that it grew more vibrantly in military era than in democracy. Democracy till yet has not delivered anything to Pakistanis. Our Politicians only use it for their corruption and country highjack.
our people don't have sense to choose their leaders. They don't know what are the basic characteristics of the leader which they should consider while choosing them. Unfortunately, nobody exist in Pakistan to educate the people on their basic rights and on which grounds they should choose their leaders. First we should educate our people then go for democracy.

I am not from Pakistan but still scored 6/10!
Those who believe that Pakistan economy did better under army should
1. Cold war => In 50,'s US Were in search of ally in south asia after India have decided to follow NAM!
Money poured in from USA
2. Zia had advantage of Soviet war in Afghanistan that poured billions $ in Pakistan
3. Musharraf too was involved in Afghanistan war that brought in billion$

Ayub's Martial Law was the industrial era of Pakistan, golden days. In Musharaf's era we all saw a media and communication flourishing. Most of the telecom private companies and almost all private tv and radio channels are of his era. Only Zia's era was controversial where there was more of islamisation, due to the cold/afghan war and Pakistan had declared its support for US. Thus the initiation of all the fanetics. Overall Military rule has given Pakistan prosperity. The statistics prove this claim. Anyone doesn't agree first go and read the facts.

There should also be an article on, How well do you know Pakistan's Corrupt Governments? We seem to remember military coups only and conveniently forget about the corrupt governments and the damage they cause to economy and nation. Most of our efforts to inform the people about political and democratic process is designed propaganda to benefit few (actually many stake holders) who are in the business of making money and encouraging corruption. Ask a common man about his life after 68 years of independence, he well tell you he has no rights. no hope of justice and no hope for future.

I respect your judgement which is so true. I now believe that there are some people left in Pakistan with such intellectual vision!
I personally feel that we give our Prime Minister Nawaz Shareef his tenure and see what he does for us rather then jump the gun...Qadri & Imrans policies are good but where will they get the MONEY from for the reforms they are talking about ???? ...Its difficult to get our money back from abroad & also to ensure that all business people pay due taxes........It can happen but will take a very long time so our citizen should first learn to be patient. I know for a fact rigging was done but not to an extent where PML would not have won this election.

Good quiz. Now make a quiz about the judges who endorsed and took "oath of allegiance" to these military rulers. Then, make a quiz about politicians who prospered under these military rulers and amassed billions in foreign bank accounts through lucrative businesses sponsored by military rulers.

USA State dept papers and British commonwealth and foreign office'declassified documents about 1950s reveal that Ayub Khan has been itching to get rid of democracy for several yrs before 1958 ,he found a willing partner in Iskander Mirza.According to these records he used to boast to American ambassadors that he would keep Politicians under control ( that is before 1958 and as C in C.) The Pakistani General has followed the same attitude and continue to inherit this diseaseto this day like some illness which runs in the family .I firmly believe Javed Hasmi is telling the truth(although a bit late) .Present situation is replay of 1968/69,1977 and this time IK,TQ are the puppets.Let us not blame the whole Army ,Jawans & most of the officers have nothing to do with this attitude ,it is only some generals who get infected with this Virus and therefore one should use the word Generals rather than Army when talking about their involment in politics and civilian affairs .Like any other individual they are welcomed to enter Politics after genuine retirement but not before.

No good choosing the best out of a rotten lot. They were all degenerates who did not care for the solemn pledge which they took as an oath of office, they were all unable to perform an honest job. Some of them were over promoted and the intellectual ability failed them. Others were plan dishonest individuals who could not be trusted with a hundred rupees note.
The world over it is proved a dozen times over that any country deteriorates economically under a dictatorship. There is reputable economist who would applaud a dictatorship for the economic progress of the country.
You may have seen a comparison in the daily Dawn a few weeks ago where a decent comparison of a Pakistani dictator's economic achievements was published. The result was consistent with the other studies in the world.
Some tell you bigger lies than others.

I am totally against any kind of dictatorship or Martial Law, very clear. But in the meantime, I would like to ask these democrats whose heads are Nawaz Sharif and Zardari.
Are they both democrat? The Answer is NO - they are worse than Fouji Dictator, If they are in power, then there is democracy in the Country, if they are NOT, then NO democracy. Their position is, they don't want elections in their own party and try to remain as heads, if NOT by any chance, then try for brother or sister and then to sons. This is NOT a democracy at all, democracy where I am a member of the party, I can also dream to become a Prime Minister, and in the democracy of these civilian dictators, I can't even think that my next 4th generation will be able to even become a member of these Assemblies, because I am from a lower middle Class and also from a lower caste, with no money, not own a house of mine, no car not even motor cycle.
What I will be in future - I will be what my father is now - a gardner.

@Sonny Afridi you are in the dark.Pakistan has never been better under military rule e.g under Ayub only textile mills were promoted no heavy industry like steel mill etc was established even the ordinance industry was primitive.Present Energy Crises actually started under Musharif and became quite bad when PPP took over in 2008(although it could not resolve it),also the Circular Debt was also getting worseunder Musharaf .However these things were not given prominence during his regime because of various anti Musharaf movements.

I agree with Rana Imran. I did my MA in 1967-69. During my studies I did not loose a single year of studies. Ayub was a military man. But credit goes to him for building Pakistan. South Korean took our 5 years planning and Bangladesh followed the family planning model. These countries have progressed and we are in reverse gear. What is the use of Democracy!
