NAROWAL: Five people were killed and 21 others injured in rain-related incidents in and around Narowal.
Besides, several villages and hundreds of acres of agricultural land were submerged due to high flood in Dek, Basanter and Baein drains.
The water level in Nullah Dek was 35,000 cusec on Friday and Jastiwala, Billa, Khara Meaga, Ghangoor, Panjgraiyan, Rampur, Rehmanpur, Wanjal and Rasheedpur villages were affected.
Sources told Dawn that the water level in Nullah Dek was expected to rise on Friday night and Saturday. The floodwater would pass through Qila Ahmadabad and Baddo Malhi on Saturday.
Similarly, Basanter and Baein were in high flood and their water spilled onto Parana Wahla, Fasipur, Nangli Doaba, Mehdi, Musalmanian, Sukmal, Negroot, Fatehpur and Balaki Chak.
The floodwater destroyed crops over hundreds of acres in the district. Five people -- Nazar Hussain, Abdur Rehman, Allah Ditta, Tanveer Bibi and Naila – were reported dead due to falling of roofs and walls while 21 others were injured.
District Coordination Officer Syed Najaf Iqbal visited the flood-affected areas and said the water level in Nullah Daek was 3,000 cusec more than last year’s. He said the government had made a five-kilometre long dyke along the drain but high flood level in Daek could cause breach any time.
The district administration was short of resources to monitor and control the situation due to very high flood in all the drains, he added.
