ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday left for New York to attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The prime minister is expected to address the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, September 26, said a statement issued by Foreign Office spokeswomen Tasneem Aslam Khan.

Aslam said that the premier will also co-chair a UN peacekeeping summit along with US Vice President Joe Biden and a few other world leaders.

The FO spokesperson said that the prime minister will hold bilateral meetings with many world leaders during his visit to the US on the sidelines of the session.

“The premier will be accompanied by a small delegation,” Aslam said.

Sharif will also participate in an energy conference along with the premiers of Norway and Denmark during which they will explore ways to acquire energy through non-conventional sources.

According to sources in Islamabad's diplomatic sources, the PM is expected to focus on a cooperation-based relationship with neighbouring countries India and Afghanistan while he will also highlight the Kashmir issue in his speech at the UN general assembly.

UN General Assembly’s 59th session will witness leaders from 120 countries across the globe.
