KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has sought formation of a technocrat government for two years, without derailing democracy, for “ruthless accountability” of those involved in looting and plundering the country.

“If any of my brothers, sisters or relatives is found guilty they should not be spared. No leniency should be shown towards them,” he told reporters in London late on Monday night after meeting Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar.

According to an MQM press release issued on Tuesday, Mr Hussain praised Governor Sarwar and went on to say that he should be made prime minister in the technocrat government. “In my opinion, Chaudhry Sarwar is the only person in Pakistan who has the courage to speak truth.”

The MQM chief said he did not support a demand by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek for the resignation of the prime minister. “Nawaz Sharif enjoys a two-thirds majority in parliament. If some people think that elections were rigged, an inquiry should be carried out to satisfy both sides. We can solve matters through dialogue,” he added.

Earlier at the meeting, the MQM chief and the Punjab governor discussed the country’s political situation.

PPI adds: Chaudhry Sarwar said political parties did not want to derail democracy. “Democracy means good governance and providing solution to people’s problems.”

He said he and Mr Hussain had discussed the political situation, problems being faced by the people because of floods and issues relating to the internally displaced persons.
