India defeats Pakistan to clinch Asian Games hockey title

INCHEON: India defeated defending champions Pakistan in a thrilling penalty shootout on Thursday to clinch the Asian Games Men’s Hockey final after a gap of 14 years.
India scored four goals in the shootout, with Pakistan only managing two.
India had earned a spot in the finals of the Asian Games after 12 years. The two teams have clashed in the finals of the Asian Games on eight previous occasions of which Pakistan has won 7.
Pakistan opened the scoring as early as the third minute with Mohammad Rizwan Sr’s field goal and dominated possession thereon in.
India hit back with a goal in the 27th minute through Kothajit Singh taking the game into and goal-less extra-time, leading to a penalty shootout.
India and Pakistan last met in an Asiad final at New Delhi in 1982 where the Indians suffered a stunning 1-7 rout in front of their own fans that included then prime minister Indira Gandhi.
In Beijing in 1990 when Pakistan claimed the gold and India the silver, there was no final since the winner was decided after a round-robin league.
Pakistan had defeated Malaysia 6-5 in a semi-final that entered the penalty shoot-out stage on Tuesday to face arch-rival India in the final. India beat South Korea in the other semi-final to reach the final.
Pakistan had defeated India 2-1 earlier on in the group stages, which lifted the Greenshirts to the top of the pool, sealing a place for the defending champions in the semi-finals.

India might have won, but Asian hockey is dead. It was looking like a match between 2 school teams each not knowing to pass the ball, hold it, dribble past people or score good goals when it came their way... As an Indian, the BEST hockey match i saw was when we were trailing Pak 4-2 in Champions Trophy and managed to beat them 6-4. Dhanraj Pillay mesmerised with his dribbling, Gagan Ajith rocked with his hatrick, Prabjot and Deepak Thakur fired goals... For Pak Sohali Abbas was in rollicking form. That was the match which had flair, passion, talent and technique. This match, I can't even compare anywhere near that. One thing to note is that though India (or for the matter Pak) would have been the first team to qualify for the Olympics, in reality we would fight for the 11th or 12th place. Its a sad sad state of affairs. India with a richer hockey india and a decent structure might do well than a 11th or 12th place finish, but for Pakistan without international matches, budget or exposure it was great to see you guys in finals and were of equal strength but lost on penalties. Better luck, till now we had the hard way of qualifying. Hope to see you guys there @ Rio with some stars like Sohail Abbas and Tahir Zaman who were the only ones whom i knew in my limited time as a hockey follower !!! Hurray I'm the 100th commentator :)

Alright then, please also mention that India have since stunned Pakistan by a margin of 7-4 twice - in 2002 at Monchengladbach and in the 2010 CWG at the same New Delhi stadium. As to the defending champions, remember that you had won gold last time in Asiad 2010 despite losing to India 2-3 in the league matches. I have great respect for the Pakistani team but this kind of reporting leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Please be humble in victory and graceful in defeat.

This is great news. But I would leave you guys with a thought. Are both indian and pakistani teams at the level of world champions. We find victory defeating each other. The world looks at us the same way we would look towards a cricket match between kenia and Zimbabwe.

My Two cents
India and pakistan should have lot of Astro turf in each cities and town. Otherwise it is difficult to retain the past Glory. This is a good performance from both sides. If it is really played on Grass not on artificial no team on earth can beat this duo.
However good going both teams.

Well done India. This takes me back to 1982, I was 9 years old and the India Pak final was to be played in National Stadium. The match had just started but we had to go to some relatives place, so we only saw the first few minutes. Then as we reached our relatives place, the match was in its final moments and were down seven goals. It was quite a shock - the goal keeper was some one called Rawat and he became infamous for years after. Every match that Rawat subsequently played, commentators would bring up the 1982 final. This memory, along with the Miandad six are two abiding memories of losses in the 80s. But they are made up by 193 win, Benson and Hedges win in 1985 as well so I can't complain.

All credit to the Pakistani team for playing brilliantly despite being short of practice games at international level which India had, who played recently at Commonwealth games beating higher ranked teams such as England, New Zealand and claiming silver medal behind Australia. India, however did not put up a good performance during these games which should be a matter of worry for the coach Terry Walsh, the famous penalty specialist from Australia. But still full credit to him for preparing this young team to reach this level in a very short time and has enough time to add skills in the weak departments.

it was closely fought contest. India and Pakistan should feel ashamed as they have to fight to their tooth to reach to world group. They have lost their contest when world team comes down. They have lot to blame for themselves than others for pathetic showing in olympics or champions league.
Pakistan n India should play more and have to increase their might not with one another but with world teams.
Atleast gold to india should see it off to play in olympics but they have to do a lot more in becoming world beaters and not just take pride against pakistan and it applies vice versa.

Congratulations India & Pakistan for playing a wonderful game. I cannot understand why the scoring ability reduced as Pakistan progressed in the game. It is the same old story. Pakistan started very strong and then seemed to get under spell or earlier victory goes to the head of players and they feel that they do not need to play good game any more and that they will go forward on past laurels and victories. I believe Pakistani players already conceived that they will loose before thegame starts or they forget that they represent Pakistan and want to blow their own trumpet.

More training and hard work to be done by Pakistan. In Asian games there are basically couple pf games to win the gold. Malaysian and Indian matches were drawn. In Malaysian match good luck helped and in the Indian match bad luck took place. As compared to the past the team has not improved and progressed. Secret weapons or secret game plans only look good on the paper. It is all in the field. So I will rate the team's result card a " D " conditional pass.

I follow dawn as well as Indian sites. What I have seen is that most of the times our pakistani brothers are more polite and don't use vulgar terms. The general pakistani ( atleast dawan readers and commenters) are more moderate in their comments.
We indians are the one to start the abuse and use filthy language . Lets be more polite and humane in our comments. There is of course no comparison between India and Pakistan. They have miles to go and hopefully someday they will catchup. Lot of issues in both country are similar.
For the moment
Jai hind and congrats India for gold medal. More to follow in kabaddi .

Pakistani team was better in skill and stamina but the goal keeper chocked under pressure whereas the Indian goal keeper upped his performance during the shootout. Hope our cricketers do not fall a victim to the same malady.

India is by far a better nation than ours and for past two decades had a better sporting infrastructure be it any sport. We The Pakistan have destroyed our structure in past two decades; thanks to some international politics with support from local The Popular leadership. But the Change is On here too, we will be back to normalization in few years and there are going to be good contests between two nations like there were in 80's. I wish lesser money to be involved in sports so that events like attack on Srilankan cricket team in Lahore few years ago due to which WC Cricket rights were taken away never happens again.

@Mortal India was left stymied by Pakistan's pace and skill, they themselves missed a few, and India was outclassed. So for the finals, where they should not have been but came by default, there only plan was to play the whole game defending to avoid Pakistan scoring. Then hoping to better Pakistan in penalty shoot out. Which by big luck they just managed. Pakistan was the better team, but at times the fate favor s the minions.

Pakistanis in contrast looked deflated from the second quarter onwards. Please accept it and move on otherwise it is only going to cause you more heartburn. It happens in sports. As far the 7 Asiad golds you are counting, we will close in on them but you can't touch our 8 Olympic golds ever!
