India mulls 'serious action' as Windies abandon tour

NEW DELHI: India's cricket chiefs could take “serious action” against the West Indies, including possibly refusing to play a return series, for abandoning their tour because of an internal payment dispute, a top official said Saturday.
The West Indies cut short the tour of India on Friday even though a fifth one-day international, a Twenty20 match and three Tests still remained to be played.
“What has happened is very disappointing and calls for serious action,” Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Sanjay Patel said. “We want to take adequate measures to ensure such a thing is not repeated.”
The BCCI's decision-making working committee will meet in Hyderabad on Monday to take stock of the situation, he added. Asked if refusing to tour the West Indies in future was an option, Patel said: “Everything will be taken into consideration.”
According to the International Cricket Council's Future Tours Programme, India are scheduled to tour the Caribbean during February and March 2016 to play three Tests, five one-dayers and a Twenty20 international.

Patel has drawn the line at barring players from the West Indies from taking part in the cash-rich Indian Premier League, according to a report in the Mumbai-based Mid-Day newspaper. “Our problem is with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and not their players,” Patel told the newspaper.
Current one-day captain Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Sunil Narine are among the top West Indies cricketers who play in the glitzy IPL Twenty20 tournament. A WICB statement issued late Friday said it was the players' decision to withdraw their services for the remainder of the tour.
Skipper Bravo had said before the start of the tour on October 8 that the players had not accepted the payment agreement signed on their behalf by the West Indies Players Association. But the players took the field for three one-dayers in Kochi, New Delhi and Dharamsala, while one match in Visakhapatnam was cancelled due to a severe storm on India's east coast.
The WICB statement said it had warned the BCCI the tour was “under a cloud of uncertainty from the inception” as a result of “postulations” by the players.
Bravo, speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony on Friday night, said: “It's been tough for us on tour ... Everyone is sticking together, despite what's going on. “We look forward to representing the West Indies again some time soon.”
The BCCI, one of the richest boards in world cricket, announced is had finalised a five-match one-day series against Sri Lanka to take place in India between November 1 and 15 to replace the cancelled tour.

Patel, cleverly played down the rhetoric of taking stern steps vs WICB ( excluding players ) a joke in itself.... without players why WICB would even exist ? if stern action is not for WICB and its players ( as both are like hand to glove ) then its for whom ? the land lords of WICB office or the neighboring beach goers in Caribbeans.
nevertheless, no other logic could be made, that WI players have contracts with certain IPL teams and in return these players have been endorsed with certain 'brands' and its all commercial loss which BCCI would like to retain by punishing empty corridors or WICB ... as they are already cash starved and poor Cricketing board and consequentially players met a financial issues with WICB ... if you intend to have stern steps then WI players must be put together in same petition else no need to show your hypocrisy which entire cricketing world is well aware of.

BCCI always has alternatives options with them and they are too fast in taking decisions processes and that's good but WICB should not have treated their players like this and make their internal problem reflect in overseas tour.As pers ICC reform every ICC member nations including associate members now gets more money than what they were getting earlier.So now when WICB gets more money from ICC after ICC revamp than it used to get earlier then there is no point in cutting the 75 % salary of their plays,ofcourse it is their internal matter but WICB should treat its players fairfully

West Indians have very lucrative contracts with IPL, wonder if they did the right thing! ! So now we have SL chipping in,another cash strapped board - needs to play India to refill it's coffers.On a lighter note,dono y Bangladesh got left out - their national economy would have benefited by playing cricket with India;)

@Akil Akhtar correction BCCI is a private body.Many in India also dislike their working style,but then when they strike it big with innovations like the super rich league IPL- public n players lap it up.You are free to say whatever you want but Like it or not,Pakistani players too feel deprived not playing in the lucrative league.Playing in india or against India now always means money.

@amit if India don't play cash strapped countries then what options left? S.A.,Australia, England and New Zealand should play in India. India will avoid touring these countries to avoid drubbing and slipping down in ICC ranking. Not many options, so have to play cash strapped countries to keep money flowing and for improvement in ICC ranking.

This is a shameful act by West Indies Cricket Team. ICI should ban West Indies for 5 years from playing any cricket matches in the World.
IPL should not allow WI cricketers participation in the league matches for 5 years.

@A Ali U sound envious without any substance. What has hypocrisy got to do with this? WICB agreed for the tour, BCCI expected revenue generation and wealth based upon it-which they lost. There is something called binding agreement which has been violated. Culprits have to pay. That is how civilized nations operate. Uncivilized nations and uncivilized people----that will be a different discussion.

I think its high time BCCI take over the WICB. They are good for nothing if they can't handle their players. Any way, cricket is a corporate business now. Boards are the company and players are the employees. West Indies players are on strike now. Either company find new employee or agree to the employee's demand. The WICB is liable for penalty if it is not able to honor its commitment for whatever reason.

lol.. so funny to read the comments here. Blaming BCCI even when it is some other board's fault. BCCI has made contracts with a lot sponsors for all the matches and this withdrawal puts a wrench in the wheel. Obviously any board would be mad, esp when most of the players in WI earn a lot of money from IPL and huge stars there. hat do you guys expect BCCI to do, pay other countries's players as well???

@Payal honouring international commitments and national heroes are two different things. All I am saying is that BCCI didn't honour its commitments with the South African board and ended up playing only 2 test matches and altered the originally planned schedule. Regards

It used to be gentlemen's game when only English and Indian Royalties used to play it. In south Asia, its commoner's game. BCCI is going to loose revenue because of WICB's internal issue. Let me put an analogy for you. Say if one company A is not able to furnish the order placed by other company B due to strike of the employee of company A, then is company B within its legal rights to sue company A for financial losses that it may accrue because of order cancellation? I am sure you would say yes because if you don't, then my friend don't venture in business ever.

In the new world order, BCCI is the new ICC.
BCCI has the right to take a call no matter which side India is on: a) if India shortens a tour of South Africa because of financial issues, BCCI will decide what is right; or b) if WI cuts short a tour to India, again BCCI should decide what is best for world cricket!

There was no commitment by bcci . CSA declared the itenary without an endorsement from BCCI. That was even when the series did not start. This issue with west indies is diferent matter all together and has no similarity to the incident you mentioned. I think pakistanis should have more rational thinking.

BCCI reduced tour to SA since BCCI wanted to put pressure on CSA: "BCCI was not happy with Haroon Lorgat's appointment as Cricket South Africa chief". So BCCI shortened an earlier agreed tour so as to in part blackmail and in part punish CSA for appointing Haroon Logart - what a sham!!
