PML-N wins Sheikhupura PP-162 by-elections

SHEIKHUPURA: Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Hassan Riaz won the Shiekhupura PP-162 by-polls on Thursday with 39,093 votes, DawnNews reported quoting unofficial results.

Unofficial results show Riaz ahead in the PP-162 by-election over Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Usman Nisar Pannu who received 22,200 votes. .

The seat had fallen vacant after the death of PML-N MPA Khurram Gulfam.

Riaz is the late MPA’s nephew. There are 137,000 registered voters in the constituency.

The Pakistan Muslim League - Quaid (PML-Q) and some religio-political parties were supporting Pannu. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) did not field any candidate as its central committee had announced a boycott of the polls.

Independent candidate Chaudhry Manzoor was also standing in the by-election.

The election commission had established 176 polling stations in the constituency, 17 of which were declared sensitive.

APP adds: Meanwhile police arrested four people over firing in air in Narang Mandi during the by-election in PP-162.

According to police, Irfan, Ghaffar, Mian Adil and another were involved in aerial firing over the lead of PML-N candidate Ch.Hassan Riaz at his residence.

All four people were held on the notice of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Police has also registered an FIR and started investigating the incident.
