I went to Cairo some years ago and had great difficulty to cover all the historic areas which numbers many hundreds if not over one thousand sites. The pictures here are too dark and few to even cover the basic and well known sites that falls into "Islamic Cairo". Where is the well known Salahuddin Citadel??

These images should cover the great and historical mosques of Cairo. Some of them are Jamea Anwar, Jamea Azhar, Masjid al Juyushi, Masjid Luluaa. The Islamic Museum counts the history of Fatemid Era. Add more images to this Album "Rediscovering Cairo's great Islamic architectural treasures"

The greatest contribution of Muslims in the world of art has been its unique architecture. These pictures are a splendid sampling of the same genre. Allama Iqbal has written a lot about this aspect. He stayed for a few days in Cairo on his way back from the second round table conference in London. Much of this heritage exists in the Central Asian Muslim states!

Egypt had far superior art , culture and monuments when it was not Islamic. Islam robbed it of it's charm and grandeur. It's true will all the civilizations where islam was forced upon people by brutal invaders.

Another interesting and great thing about Al Hussani mosqe is that Muslims of all fiqhs offer prayers together under one roof.

@Abbas Ali Hi Abbas are you aware of the monuments destroyed by muslims? Countless people perished and unimaginable amount of resources were spent for construction of Taj Mahal which could have been put to better use. Sahajahan and his empire got bankrupt.

@Debadutta Irony...now who is destroying peaceful and intelligent discussion...dawn and its readers welcomes commentators for harmonious exchange of ideas and thoughts rather unfortunately some people chose to disrupt this positive process of mutual exchange...
