While her husband Amitabh Bachchan is all praise for film Happy New Year, Jaya Bachchan did not hesitate to voice her honest opinion about their son Abhishek Bachchan’s film and described it the "most nonsensical film."
According to NDTV.com the 66-year-old actor who snubbed the film at the Mumbai Literature Festival said: “HNY is the most nonsensical film I’ve seen in recent years. I said that to the film’s lead actor as well. I watched it only because Abhishek was part of it. I told him he’s a great actor if he can act stupid in front of the camera like that."
Known for her roles in Abhimaan, Sholay and Milli, Jaya Bachchan has been out of the cinema scene for quite some time now.
"I can’t be part of what is being done in films these days and hence I don’t do films anymore,” she said.
Speaking at a session titled “The failure of literature in informing current cinema”, the acclaimed actor said: “Unfortunately cinema today is about business, not art. We call good films ‘art house cinema’. What does that even mean? All cinema is art.”
In Farah Khan's Happy New Year, Abhishek plays Nandu Bhide, a 'loser' who enters a dance championship in Dubai with the intention to rob a bank. The film also stars Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone and has managed to collect over Rs300 crore worldwide since it released on October 24.

I would go further than Jaya Bachchan and say the Happy New Year film is a sly Indian copy of Oceans Eleven. Not only that you simply cannot watch a lot of Indian films with your family nowadays. In the past, for me the main drawing point of Indian films was that they were generally 'clean' of nudity, sex, kissing and really family friendly. Not anymore as far as I am concerned Indian films have gone downhill like on a roller coaster!

I agree with you madam.
But by the same argument the junk produced mostly in the 1980's, 1990's was equally nonsensical by the same margin compared with some of the memorable and unbeatable classics of the 1950's and 1960's. Same goes with the melodious songs produced then (Rafi, Naushad, Hasrat, Shakeel Badayuni) still haunt memories as if timeless.

It may be about business now but it was always about business. Population has changed, western values have infiltrated, concept of love, tragedy, success and music is different and audience simply will not accept what's being produced. Cinema on both sides of the border has to change with the changing times. This concept of two people about to kiss and then they don't, but suddenly they are in the mountains, valleys and lakes, singing and dancing, is no longer popular. There are several other things but I can't go on.

Ok, this is where we are with this declaration. Every possible attempt has been made and failed to resurrect AB junior career in Bollywood. He is not even an average actor and should have had the decency to move to pasture new a long time ago. Here, mummy dearest has been diplomatically advised to take a critical view in order to bring some awareness on his son’ presence and in the hope that some activity will be triggered in his favour. Looking at some of the comments here, one can see how some gullible readers got trapped in this psychological approach. It is time to wake up people and be a step ahead of these manipulators who have fooled us for years.

Key here is , "Unfortunately cinema today is about business, not art". That is true with everything in India. We damaged the world cricket with IPL/match fixing because of business/MONEY. That is what we did to Cinema. We are exporting nudity and vulgarism, what has happened to us.????

I think there is something seriously wrong with the Bollywood fans more than the industry itself. Jaya may not have a choice as it was her son's movie but people always have a choice after reading critics & word of mouth reviews.
Producers would rightly keep minting 200-300 crores with every Kick, HNY. Honestly, good movies like Queen, Haider do not make them even one-third the amount of money!!!

@Prakash my friend you have pretty crappy taste in movies. When a thespian of the caliber of Jaya Bachan disses it then who are you to say it's a good movie. That's the problem with the so called "educated" people of today. They appreciate cheap movies and songs like Sheela Kaa Bhudhaapa and movies like "Crappy" New Year.

HNY is definitely a time waste.. see only if you've spare money and 3 hrs time to waste. Having said that, I don't agree with the generalisations being made regarding bollywood movies. More than 300 movies a year is no small things. Many good movies also come in between. Bang bang and haider released on same day. Haider was far better but was for a limited audience. Bang bang was masala movie so earned more riding on publicity and simultaneous release in over 5000 screens. Money earned and publicity are not criteria for a good movie. Bollywood give all options so don't make views after watching on bases of publicity and star cast selectively.

She is spot on (not just about this film but what is being done in Bollywood in general these days). Most of the recent big budget big star movies were nonsensical as they are based on silly premise and had a lot of logical flaws in their stories. It seems the producers and actors are only interested in drawing big audience and earning higher revenues without any regard to quality of the movies. On the other hand some of the best movies I have seen have come from alternate cinema and from little known actors.

Shahrukh khan is now a joke! The guy did not produce anything worth watching for decades now. He is living off marketing stunts and a "Dilwale Dulhaniya le Jayenge" which was released around 20 years ago. It was anyway a Yash Raj Chopra film, who produced punjabi gems like veer zara and DDLJ.
Sharukh himself actually had very little to contribute to his fake stardom, which is built around cheap marketing gimmicks.
Shahrukh lived off the talents of awesome actresses like Madhuri, Juhi, Kareena, priyanka and Deepiika. He lived off like a parasite, on directors like Yash ji, karan Johar...whos films are deep rooted in the cultural marvel of Punjab of the yore. Shahrukh actually lived off Punjab.
Jaya said very correctly that Cinema which is basically an art form, has become purely a business. This degradation of a visual art form in to a road-side type commercial joke, has an icon, a perfect, modern symbol of this lowliness....and he is shahrukh. SRK now sucks.

The beauty of old era movies be it for lyrics, or for a closely knit story with a few twists is gone now a days. Also, the movie has become a commercial venture to the extent that the inherited and close family values are abandoned completely - and everyone is running for collecting "money" for their families and themselves. Some times, I wonder what happens if the actor/actress stopped breathing for a moment - this money would count? Also don't make mistake - make money- but give ti back to society who needs it and help add value to other lives. Not just accumulating and flashing it in public leaving the values aside. Also please see who become the victims? Our own children thinking what the father and mother are doing is right - and therefore can't decide what is good for their lives to reach bliss / peace of mind.
