SUKKUR: At least 14 students were injured on Saturday when their school van fell into a canal in Sukkur.

The van was travelling from Sangi to a school in Pano Aqil when it fell into a canal in the area of Hingoro located in Pano Aqil. Subsequently, 14 children sustained minor injuries.

Police and personnel from a nearby Edhi centre arrived at the site of accident. The casualties were shifted to a local hospital. After being provided medical treatment, the children were discharged and sent back to their homes.

The driver reportedly escaped after the incident.

Sources told Dawn that the accident occurred due to the driver's negligence. The van fell into the canal when the driver attempted to reverse and overtake another vehicle.

Pakistan has one of the world’s worst records for fatal traffic accidents, blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
