BERLIN: German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday said that Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, “is the identity of Pakistan.”
The Chancellor made the remarks during a press conference with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is on an official visit to Germany.
“A courageous girl like Malala Yousafzai is the identity of Pakistan,” said Merkel.
When asked a question regarding negative views of Malala in Pakistan, the prime minister shrugged aside the perception.
“I think Malala has done a great service for Pakistan, the country was very proud when she received the award,” said the prime minister.
The German Chancellor said that she held a very positive meeting with the prime minister where they discussed a number of issues including Afghanistan.
“A stable Afghanistan is in the best interest of Pakistan,” said the German Chancellor.
“Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and I had a very productive discussion...We want to improve bilateral relations between Pakistan and Germany,” Merkel said.
Nawaz said that he has officially invited the German Chancellor to visit Pakistan.

During the press conference, Angela Merkel said Germany is looking to increase its investments in Pakistan, especially in the energy sector, provided the conditions are right.
Merkel said Germany's KfW state development bank was already involved in projects in Pakistan including hydro power plants, but added that the security situation was sometimes a deterrent.
“We can look at intensifying these (investments), as long as the conditions are right,” Merkel told the joint news conference.
Nawaz said that German companies had shown plenty of interest in his country's energy sector.
The prime minister arrived in Berlin on Monday for a two-day official visit on the invitation of Angela Merkel.
Nawaz will also address a Business Forum organised by the Pakistan Board of Investment, which is expected to be attended by a large number of German business executives and investors.
After concluding his official visit to Germany, the premier is expected to visit the UK from November 12 to 13 in order to inaugurate the Pakistan-UK Energy Dialogue and Investment Conference to be held in London.

I'm not from Pakistan, but I don't believe in Malala..... I honestly believe that the Nobel prize should have gone to Sir Edhi for his unparalleled work. I didn't know who Edhi was, before Dawn published news that Edhi center had been robbed and there was huge outcry over it here in comments section. Then I went, did a little research on Edhi and astonished how politically biased Malala's nobel prize was.

Most Paskistanis, 99.999 % of them, revere and love Malala and her superb achievements. Some of them sympathize with Afia Siddiqui; doesn't mean they love her.
An insignificant fractional percentage that have some different perspective on Malala have a right to their opinion and that is the essence of democracy and none should resent it.

No reservations against Malala. However, we don't want German Chancellor to declare our identity. Malala might have won a nobel for a nobel cause which aligns with the priorities of West but that doesn't mean it aligns with our goals or provide solution to our internal affairs. As far as my Indian brothers are concerned, they comment here will all the negativity and hatred possible no matter how positive the news is. At least, they are taking interest in our internal affairs and reading our leading newspaper and we should do the same. We either have to live together or next to each other. Hopefully one day we will be able to accept this fact and shed this shell of hatred which is benefiting rest of the world except us.

Malala was the creation of proteges of US and Pakistan .When they injected venom,Pakistan forgot that these snakes will bite back Now what is the point not acknowledging her?US paid through their Nose for all these follies.It was a mutual benefit scheme. Germany agreed to boost business with Nawaz Shaif provided Pakistan agreed to follow the instructions given to him, now and then, in domestic and global context as Pakistan was doing with that of the America since its inception. It is said that the PM of Pakistan agreed because China has already shown the door to Pakistan during PM's recent visit to China and Pakistan has completely lost its honor as a respectable state in the comity of nations. The world does not believe if Pakistan could re-quip its position in future.

@ Elemental. I read your comments with interest. There are many awards in this world, and the Nobel Prize happens to be just one of them. One does good in this world for the sake of goodness, like I am sure you do. One should not take the Nobel Prize very seriously, as you have pointed out is a recognition by a group of people, selected for the purpose of selecting the recipient of the prize. All humans are fallible, and open to question, and the Prize is only a reflection of our humanness, Edhi's work and life long contribution to humankind is in no way belittled by Malala. I personally, as have many thousands ( without any exaggeration) have taken help of his ambulance services, we pay in kind, and nothing is demanded by the driver, we are blessed with people like him, more so with so much extremism, intolerance, violence in this country. Edhi epitomizes the good that we all are capable of doing but do not have the strong will to actually do it.
