In Pakistan, close to 9,000 road accidents are reported to the police every year since 2011, killing over 4,500 people on average, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
On Tuesday, over 55 people were killed in Khairpur, Sindh, in what was the country’s worst traffic accident in a year after a passenger bus and truck collided. This terrible tragedy did not occur in a void, or without predictors.
Pakistan has a poor record of fatal traffic accidents due to bad roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving that remains unchecked by authorities.
To quantify the grave problem that persists, Dawn.com has visualised Pakistan's traffic accidents, built from data available from the PBS.
The data shows a downwards trend in accidents, deaths and injuries in general since 2004, although total numbers remain high.

Life has no value in our country. Ask anyone to fasten seat belt and people will think you are stupid one to suggest such a silly, ungodly, western, bookish thing....

Lies, damn lies and statistics. In UK with a population of 62 million, there were 3500 deaths last year due to traffic accidents. They have one of the best and most organised traffic system in the world. With our system I cannot believe this number to be any less than 6 figures. Keep head buried in sand is state policy and cooked up numbers to support it.

Compared with Britain, the numbers seem to be low. Fudging is not uncommon in Pakistan. Also, Dawn is trying to portray KP worse than other provinces. Why?

Very informative & eye opening article one can read with teary eyes. But chances are NO government official would be held responsible, no one would accept responsibility for failure or resign. Yes, it seems that sense of ACCOUNTABILTY does not exist any more. All politicians flying around here & there or making political statements. No one seem to have time to think of public safet, or think it through WHY tax payers are paying their salary and perks for?? No almost all think they are above it all, VIP's or rich elites, or building empires. It seems no one thinks in democracy, you serve the people who pay your SALARY, you are their servant. Heaven forbid, if some one called any of the aristrocrates or high official 'servant of the people' by mistake, may be risking being thrown behind bars in no time. Shsh... please keep quite, don't criticize, or you may be derailing democracy. Zindabad.

The government needs to include in some traffic rules and regulations in curriculum at least at high school level to increase civic sense of the citizens. It is very necessary that all drivers must have passed theoretical and practical tests to be qualified drivers. There should be an age limit at first instance and a vigilant modern electronic system, at least in few areas of the country which are more hazardous, with strict penalty charges so drivers may develop themselves to drive safely.

Dawn, stop being biased. You never lose an opportunity to bash Imran Khan. The nation has its last hope in Imran Khan, but you are playing politics.

@MAlvi why you see everything with the eyes of Imran Khan? Why can't you ever think beyond Imran Khan?
The data is since year 2004, when Imran Khan could hardly even a Councillor seat. The NA seat from Mianwali was blessing of General Musharraf whom he ditched when Musharraf didn't pick Imran Khan as Prime Minister.
KPK has been ruled by different parties including MMA & ANP. The result of May2013 was only a fluke for PTI when ANP could not run its electoral campaigns as a number of its 2nd line leaders were killed by TTP.
