KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court remanded on Friday a police inspector in police custody in an extortion case.

Inspector Mohammad Urs Rajar, posted at the anti-violent crime cell, was caught red-handed on Nov 13 in the Kharadar area while taking protection money from a trader.

The police produced the suspect before the court and sought his custody for questioning.

The judge, Saleem Raza Bloch, of the ATC-III handed over the suspect to police on physical remand for a week and asked the investigating officer to reproduce him along with a progress report on next hearing.

According to the prosecution, the police officer was allegedly collecting Rs50,000 from Shabbir Memon at the time of his arrest.

He was booked under Sections 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) and 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or of grievous hurt) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 at the Mithadar police station.

Policemen get bail

A judicial magistrate granted on Friday bail to two policemen in a case pertaining to escape of a suspect.

Police Constables Raja Maqsood and Hameed Murad of the Hyderi police station were arrested following the escape of Farhan, booked in an illicit weapon case, from their custody on Nov 9 on the premises of the city courts.

A judicial magistrate (south) granted them bail against the surety bond of Rs50,000 each.

A case was registered against the policemen and the escaped suspect under Sections 223 (escape from custody negligently suffered by public servant), 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) and 225-B (resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension or escape or rescue in cases not otherwise provided for) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code at the city courts police station.
