LAHORE: Fancied bay colt Aslan landed a remarkable victory in the supporting event to register his career’s second success during the 11th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday.

Given an excellent ride from jockey M. Hanif, the A.B. Malik-trained 30 to 100 favourite collared New Tear within few strides to triumph by over three lengths for owner Junaid Rasheed Rana.

The Tauqir Ahmed-trained bay colt New Tear could make no impression on the winner to be content with runners up position with stable mate Vixen third by the same margin in this sixth race of the day.

A race earlier the 10 to 100 favourite bay filly Face Book virtually made all the running to score a landslide success in the Arbab Nur Mohammad Khan Cup run over 1,200 metres.

Trained by M. Afzal, the winner gave an armchair ride to jockey Shakeel Mahmood with the Shahid Rehman-trained chestnut colt Salvador with M. Hanif in the saddle occupying second position. Dark-bay colt Anchor and chestnut Noble Mission completed the frame.

In the fourth race three-year-old bay colt, Fist (with Khalil Vicky up) who won the race was disqualified on an objection lodged by A. Raza, the rider of Victory Malik that finished second, for boring and pressing. LRC stewards upheld the objection awarded the race to Victory Malik.

Midway through the proceedings, the race-goers held a minute’s silence to mourn the loss of Lahore Race Club (LRC) stipendiary steward A. Hameed and a prominent ex-horse owner Khawaja Wasihuddin who both passed away recently.

Before joining the LRC as stipendiary steward,. Hameed had a long career as a horseman and was one-time ranked among good riders in his hey days. He had the distinction of winning the Pakistan Derby once.

Wasihuddin preferred to join the ranks of owners after resigning from the Punjab Police. Ingrained with the qualities of head and hearts he greeted every one with a broad smile for which he was respected in racing circles.

He was a nephew of legendry hockey player, horse-owner and LRC steward the late Munir Ahmed Dar.
