Khairpur accident

Published November 19, 2014

THIS is apropos your editorial ‘Roads as death traps’ (Nov 12). It is indeed a great tragedy that nearly 60 people died in an accident near Khairpur owing to a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck.

It is difficult to exactly pinpoint the cause of this fatal accident. The cause may be ‘road worthiness’ of the bus and possibly fatigue of the driver.

It is time that the authorities concerned took immediate action to check the fitness of vehicles. Traffic policemen should also check the state of alertness of drivers, particularly on the highways.

It is indeed a matter of great concern that mini-buses in Karachi are heavily overloaded, with a large number of passengers sitting on the rooftop.

It is a common sight to see such mini-buses moving with speed in busy traffic. God forbid, if any accident takes place. There is time for immediate action in the matter.
