Bahawalpur zoo

Published December 24, 2014

THE Bahawalpur zoo was established in 1942. Once a source of attraction for visitors because of a variety of animals and birds, the zoo has now been reduced to a picture of neglect.

Most cages remain without animals or birds. Poor maintenance of infrastructure, improper cleanliness, overcharging of entrance ticket, improper animal breeding, poor conditions of swings and official apathy have contributed to its downfall.

Further, some years ago most of the animals and birds were transferred to other zoos in various parts of the province under an exchange programme, but the local zoo was not compensated in the programme and was deprived of its animals.

The local administration, the zoo management and the Wildlife Department should take measures to restore the zoo to its original position.
