Martial law better than military courts in Pakistan: Altaf

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Wednesday said that it would be better to have martial law in Pakistan than to set up military courts, DawnNews reported.
However, he warned that it would be a mistake to think that the army alone could solve the country's problems.
The MQM leader made the remarks during an emergency telephonic press conference at the party’s Nine-Zero headquarters.
During his speech, Altaf suggested that COAS General Raheel Sharif should handle the affairs of state for two years.
He said that it would be better if the army took over rather than having military courts.
"If an undemocratic path is to be taken, martial law may as well be imposed," he said.
He also said that since martial law had been placed in Pakistan many times before, it could be imposed again.
"Martial law has been imposed a hundred times, why not once more," Altaf said.
The MQM leader has warned before that the army could take over if the situation deteriorated in Pakistan.

In late August, during anti-govt protests that were being held in Islamabad, Altaf Hussain had warned the government and protesters that the country would have yet another martial law if they did not resolve their dispute.
However he also said his warning about martial law should not be interpreted as supporting a military takeover.

Altaf, like Imran Khan and Qadri, is another over-ambitious man who is willing to take away the voting rights of the people of Pakistan in hopes of becoming the civilian puppet prime minister of a martial law regime. Individuals like these should be banned from running for elections.

oh yes, impose Martial law and then start also operation Karachi. too indiscriminately. Then AH will be first person who will be blaming Army and ISI. This guy is happy only when nobody touch his criminals...whenever someone touch his criminals he start blaming game again and again...we see this for years now...

Please....Go to sleep. As much as I don't support the idea of military courts being established as it can lead to many atrocities; however in the situation we are in, civil government is weak: Military courts should be established, I would even support General Raheel to lead the country for 2 years atleast to bring Pakistan back up.

First of all, can the Nawaz government not expedite the terrorism related cases by forming another cell - speed courts from department of Justice and fix the deadlines like within maximum of 3 months, the judgement be delivered. If these guys need to work hard with police and others, let it be. It is, after all, for your own safety and to weed-out civilians from barbarians. If Military court is the option, then let us not complain if the judgement if it is lopsided/partial - as their skills are limited and entirely geared towards (fixing the responsibility) their armed forces and not for civilians. Civil government shoulder most of the responsibility and leave these over-stretched armed forces some time to help themselves do better. It is unjustifiable to seek Army's help all the time for any country.

Hard to understand apprehensions. Hope military courts would be established soon. Under prevailing circumstances military courts should be given a go ahead for one year time, to deal with terrorism cases. Lets hope military courts would deal with all types of criminals, terrorists, target killers, bhatta khores, including any political patrons of bhatta khores. Speedy trials please.

@JZ I think once martial law will impose then obviously understood that there will be military courts as well, because whosoever commit crime, object, create problem then they have to be handled with firm hands.

Military courts working under the civil government is not a new idea and it is quite workable in our law and order situation.Problem with Altaf Hussain is that in Martial Law government his party will share power but under military courts his party men may face cases registered against them.

Civilian government is no match for terrorism. Too much love for money and power makes them cowards and afraid to die.
We need a bold and brave PM and president combo.

As expected the MQM is totally confused about the issues facing Pakistan.Every one knows how miserably Musharaf and previous martial laws failed to control terrorism and in improving law and order situation ,therefore Miltary govt as well as Miltary courts are not the answer to solvepresent situation.However firmness and awareness are the only way to control the terrorism.Why Musharaf govt not carry out the death sentences of terrorists and left it for the civilian govt to sort these out?

It's strange. On one hand Altaf Hussain says, military alone can't solve the problem. He is suggesting Marshall Law, on the other.

Pakistan history has proven that Martial Law NEVER was and will NEVER BE THE SOLUTION. Leave Military to protect the country from its enemies. A just and strong constitution and strict rule of law is the answer.
