The Pac man frog

THE colourful Argentine horned frog is nicknamed the “Pac Man frog” because it swallows its prey whole through a mouth as wide as its head! These voracious eaters have sharp teeth and tend to live alone — maybe because, if they get hungry enough, they’ll even eat each other.

The mouse that howls

THE desert-dwelling Southern grasshopper mouse is also called the scorpion mouse because it kills and eats scorpions! These fierce rodents are mostly carnivorous, which is rare among mice, and they have the unusual habit of standing on their hind legs and howling.

Dolphins that turn pink

THE Chinese white dolphin is born black but lightens as it ages, becoming grey, then pink or white. It’s often mottled with two colours. The larger populations around Hong Kong face threats from increased boat traffic, overfishing, and water and noise pollution.

Swimming with the oarfish

THE giant oarfish, the world’s longest bony fish, can be up to 50 feet long! This elusive animal lives in deep ocean waters and is rarely seen alive. In 2011, marine biologists using a remotely operated vehicle captured the first video of five oarfish in the Gulf of Mexico.
