KARACHI: Two policemen were shot dead in Samanabad on Wednesday morning, the police said.

They added that after performing their night duty the police constables were on their way to the Samanabad police station when they saw a suspect standing near the Gulshan-i-Umer mosque at Sohrab Goth at 7.40am.

The suspect opened fire on the policemen with his 0.9mm pistol.

The policemen suffered critical wounds and were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced 40-year-old Asghar Hussain and 35-year-old Mohammed Hussain dead on arrival. The suspect fled.

“The double murder of policemen appears to be linked with terrorism,” said Liaquatabad SP Mohammed Ihsan Malik. He added that the Samanabad police SHO had been suspended and demoted for his ‘negligence’.

Mohammed Hussain, resident of KBR Society, hailed from Punjab while Asghar Hussain lived in Shah Faisal Colony. Both had been with the police department for the past several years.
