MULTAN: Two convicted terrorists were hanged in the New Central Jail here on Wednesday.

The death warrant had been received from anti-terrorism courts a few days ago.

Mercy petitions of Ghulam Shabbir alias Doctor alias Fauji of Chak No21/8-R, Tulamba district Khanewal, and Ahmed Ali alias Sheesh Nag, who hailed from Shorkot in district Jhang were rejected by President Mamnoon Hussain.

Ghulam Shabbir was hanged at 5:34am and Ahmed Ali at 5:46am under the supervision of Judicial Magistrate Abid Shaukat. Medical Officer Dr Shahzad examined the convicts before the execution and later confirmed their death.

Jail Superintendent Saeedullah Gondal said both the convicted men were members of the outlawed Sipah-i-Sahaba.

Strict security arrangements were made as army, Rangers and police personnel were deployed in and outside the jail.

Ghulam Shabbir, 44, was reportedly a close associate of Riaz Basra, who founded Lashkar-i-Jhangvi along with Malik Ishaq in 1996. He was known as doctor in his village where he ran a clinic.

On Oct 22, 1998, he opened fire at a police party at Gulistan Chowk. An FIR No754/98 was lodged against him in New Multan Police Station for murdering Deputy Superintendent of Police Allah Nawaz Khan, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Bilal, Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdul Rasheed and six constables.

Various cases of terrorism had been lodged against him in Khanewal and Lahore.

He was arrested in 1999 and sentenced to death by a special anti-terrorism court on June 21, 2002. The Supreme Court upheld the judgment in 2009.

Ahmed Ali was 22 years old when he gunned down in 1998 Altaf Hussain who was sitting in his shop on the Railway Road.

Altaf Hussain, Mohammad Nasir and Mohammad Fiaz were killed while Mohammad Pervez and Mohammad Siddique were injured in the attack. A case was lodged under Section 302, 103 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
