@Lucky Star I think you might be right. Gold is expensive even in India, I don't see why it makes sense to smuggle it into Pakistan from India instead of selling it in India itself. Today's rates are $474 in Pk vs $509 in India (tola, 24K) - in comparison Dubai is $463. I think the couple was emigrating, authorities should set them free.

30 tolas; what a pity? Please let her have it; don't term it smuggling; there isn't any profit involved; must be of her use or for gift etc. So what if she is Indian?

I am always confused by these arrests by the Customs authorities. It's perfectly alright for our thieving politicians to smuggle airplanes filled with gold and dollars but someone can't bring in a mere 30 tolas of gold, which mind you, has perfectly legitimate origins and is most probably not bought with stolen money?
How much gold exactly is one allowed to carry on inbound and outbound flights? Dawn should have an investigative journalist ask someone at Pakistan Customs to clear this issue up once and for all.

The report doesn't say what was the origin and destination of her journey. whether she was carrying gold from Pakistan to India, or smuggled in to Pakistan. If she brought 30 tola gold biscuits from India, then the questions are how did the customs in India let her go without paying gold duty? what other items have Indians been bringing to Pakistan through Indian customs? If she was carrying the same to India, then Pak customs did a fine job nabbing her on their side of the border.

Maybe they were planning to emigrate to Pak. Let them be. Please divert your attention from meager biscuits to bricks worth billions of rupees flying out of the country by our politicos.
