SWABI: The University of Swabi is unlikely to reopen in coming days as it has yet to take the security measures mandated by the government to ensure safety and security of students.

Sources said that though a meeting chaired by vice-chancellor Dr Noor Jehan the other day discussed various steps for enhancing security so the varsity could reopen as early as possible, it failed to decide on a date for reopening it.

A security and protocol officer said that the meeting discussed various measures like erecting watch towers, provision of walky-talkies to security personnel, raising boundary wall.

The participants couldn’t tell exactly when the varsity was going to reopen, only saying that efforts were on foot to reopen as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, sources told Dawn that a few days back the district security team led by Chota Lahor DSP Izhar Shah visited the university where they identified loopholes in the security system of the varsity.

As the security team expressed dissatisfaction over the poor security situation at the varsity, the district administration didn’t give security clearance to it for reopening, added the sources.

“The security team suggested raising the boundary walls, erecting watch towers and taking various other security measures before reopening,” they maintained.

DSP Izhar Shah told Dawn that the team had asked the varsity administration to enhance security, otherwise, it won’t be issued no objection certificate for reopening.
