Obama cancels Taj Mahal visit to go to Riyadh: White House

NEW DELHI: US President Barack Obama will cancel a planned trip to the Taj Mahal, cutting short his visit to India to travel to Saudi Arabia following King Abdullah's death, the White House said Saturday.
“President Obama and the First Lady will travel to Riyadh on Tuesday, January 27 in order to pay respects to King Salman bin Abdulaziz and the family of the late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest in a statement.
Obama was scheduled to go to India's famed monument to love with First Lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday, at the end of a three-day visit to the country.
Hundreds of cleaners had been hired to spruce up the white marbled mausoleum in preparation for their arrival. Earlier the Hindustan Times website had cited unnamed Indian officials as saying Obama was cutting his India visit short to fly to Saudi Arabia following the death of King Abdullah.
The Hindu website had carried a similar report, quoting a government source as saying: "It's possible that he might leave India earlier".
Obama will hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and become the first serving US president to be guest of honour at the Republic Day parade during his second visit to India since taking office. Analysts say the invitation to attend Monday's Republic Day celebrations emphasises a new closeness between the world's two largest democracies.
In an interview published Friday, Obama said “the stars are aligned” to enable the United States and India to forge a global partnership.
The cancellation of the Taj Mahal visit would deprive the country's top tourist attraction of publicity at a time when the government is trying to boost visitor numbers.
Twitter users rushed to thank the president for orchestrating a clean-up of the mausoleum in the town of Agra, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved empress who died during childbirth in 1631.

Hmm understandable situation with sudden death of Saudi King whose funeral falls on 27th and who once was an ally who stood by US at various occasions,Its is earlier reported that Obama will be there in India for 3 days i.e on 25th,26th and 27th full but now he will depart a bit early on 27th to attend Saudi funeral.Nevertheless unexpected situation demand such a bit a change in plan here and there.

Real reason, Supreme Court of India banned any type of fuel emitting vehicle within 500 mtr. perimeter of premises, All foreign heads of states those visited Taj have traveled in Electric Vehicles, so For security reasons this was cancelled.
Even if President of India or PM narendra Modi want to visit then they have to obay that rule.
In my personal opinion there must be some exception in this law, Supreme court should review its law.

US has no choice but to boost Indian power on all fronts from economy to defense, and politics to science and technology with a single aim to contain China which is increasingly becoming the biggest threat to american hegemony in the 21st century. Pakistan is in a very delicate situation. It is surrounded by hostile enemy on its eastern and western borders which has engaged it in a war on terror for more than a decade. We have to see how Pakistan can come out of this situation. With US, once its biggest ally, switching sides and putting its weight behind India, Pakistan needs to revisit its foreign policy. Its geographical situation gives it the biggest advantage which it needs to capitalize sooner than later. Bu pushing China and Russia to join ECO, they should concentrate on forming a regional economic block. Right now, Pakistan is facing two major challenges. One is the war on terror and the other one is its fragile economy. Pakistan must focus on ECO region which has tremendous potential. It can serve as an economic corridor between China and the ECO countries. We must focus on economic and human development like what Japan did after the war. Our survival is in economic prosperity and ECO offers massive opportunity.

These are all national interests. Nothing more nothing less. US does not consider India as its so called friend nor does it consider Saudi arabia as same or for that matter Pakistan. It's all about national interests. US national interest during Cold War meant Pakistan got all the attention due to its geographical location. Now post Cold War China containment policy means India gets all the attention and Pakistan takes a back seat. Saudi Arabia has oil so it's important plus it's unique status in the muslim world. Let's stop pretending this is long lost friendship. US will only look at its own national interest and they don't hide this fact.

This is important to note that those chanting world wide democracy slogans keep their mouth box shut when it comes to rule of Al Saudi dynasty. Their slogans only depicts their interests and their silence is also in alignment if their interests rather principles.
It is important to note that the way US govt have relationship and partnership with India that is not equal and balanced with her relationships with Pakistan. Again personal interests are ruling over principles.
Pakistan and rest of Muslim world should look for alternatives leaving Saudi isreli nato Indian axis aside. It would be suicidal if still Pakistani leadership keep relying over US and Saudis.

Good that Obama cancelled Taj visit. It was organised as a personal visit at the request of Obama as a courtesy by India. It will spare India of the additional security arrangements and the inconvenience to public. The main purpose of the visit ie defence, technology and investment agreements are intact. Kudos to India for a great achievement at such a low cost!!!!

But the news of Obama visiting India for signing agreements and trying to woo India to become a strong ally like a NATO ally is suppressed with no importance on issues regarding what Obama would be doing on a 3 day trip to India. China needs access to Central Asian States and Central Asia needs access to warm waters. Gawadar port can serve as a trading hub linking these regions. Pakistan being the founding member of ECO can spearhead the move of regional economic integration with the support of Iran and Turkey. ECO Trade and Development Bank has already been set up with its Head Quarter in Istanbul. The pace is slow but they are moving in the right direction. This region has massive reserves of natural resources and has the potential to become one of the most thriving regions in the world. To achieve that end, I would again stress that we need to defeat this menace of terrorism.

Rulers always care about their territory first.Having said that, India would always be there for a long long time and Taj Mahal is also not going anywhere. why pakistan is happy over this? all important meetings would be done. its just so called taj mahal visit has been canceled. that was just a concluding part of the visit. but then how can pakistanis understand these high profile things. had they been knowledgeable then they wouldn't have failed everywhere like they have.

President Obama can visit Taj Mahal again or anytime but he cannot attend the king's funeral any other time except on Jan 27th and he must attend it too.

@zak He HAS to go to SArabia.Thats why he shortened his trip to India. He wont even spend an extra hour in Saudi Arabia. One thing about importance-wether SArabia or India , trip to Pakistan is NOT important at all! and btw NO invitation to Sharrif until hafiz is handed over to India.

Obama has decided to come to taj mahal at a later time with beyonce instead. In the mean while, at least the place has been cleaned after a long time. Modi can finally enjoy some private time with himself at the love place ;)

@M. Asghar Nd how will they do so? I mean Japan is against China, India is against China, ASEAN is against China, nd Taiwan is against China. In every direction most of d bordering countries r against China. Then how it is going 2 make it costly fr Imdia r anyone else?????
