GUJRAT: The Punjab government has decided to make the Rasul College of Technology in Mandi Bahauddin as the first ever technology university in Punjab instead of the earlier proposal of making the college the university of engineering and technology.

It has also been decided to keep the Rasul College’s original name intact even after its upgrading.

It will be known as the Rasul College of Technology (a Chartered University), as decided in an official committee meeting to review preparations of the charter and other necessary official and legal work with the federal parliamentary Secretary for Defence MNA Chaudhary Jaafar Iqbal the chair.

Punjab Higher Education Commission Chairman Professor Dr Nizamuddin, VC of University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, secretary industries, secretary higher education department and chief executive of TEVTA are the other members of the committee which was constituted by the Punjab chief minister around a year ago. The UET VC has been the project director of the proposed university in Rasul.

Having a rich history, the Rasul College has been preparing associate engineers through three years diploma courses mostly in civil engineering since its foundation.

MNA Jaafar Iqbal told Dawn that the charter of the technology university for the Rasul College had been prepared and it would soon be tabled in the assembly for approval. He said classes for the four years engineering course had already commenced in electrical, civil, mechanical and information technology disciples.

He said that there had been a lot of engineering universities but the country lacked technology universities.

He said that the proposed technology university would have a special focus on allied health sciences.
