SWABI: The plant and flower nursery business has boomed in Swabi over the years not only helping local families earn a livelihood with dignity but also contributing to the environmental conservation efforts. Until some years ago, there were few nurseries in the district.
The people used to grow plants and trees for household and construction purposes.
However, things are quite different now as nurseries are everywhere offering a vast range of plant and flower varieties.
“Growing plants and flowers has become a thriving business. Those who put money in it some years ago are now reaping its fruits. I hope more people will turn to the business in the days ahead,” said Dr Mohammad Jasim, who has developed a nice garden in his house.
The people complained about high prices of plants and flowers.
“Last year a flower was sold for Rs20 but its prices has now jumped to Rs50. And if it’s a new variety, then we have to pay even more,” said Mohammad Riaz of Maneri Bala village.
He said the prices of plants were also very high.
Nursery owners insisted they had to suffer a huge loss due to the frosty weather, which killed many flowers and plants.
They feared the loss would surge if the temperatures didn’t increase.
“We have lost so many plants to the biting cold weather. In some cases, we’re even trying to claim the cost of business let alone make a profit,” said Bakhtiar Khan, a plant supplier in Topi city.
The nursery grower complained the people knew nothing or little about the importance of plant growing and its positive impact on environment.
“We’ve failed to encourage nursery owners to grow more and more plants, persuade people to buy plants and flowers, and highlight beautification projects,” he said.
