BAHAWALPUR: The Punjab Seed Corporation (PSC) has adjudged two cotton varieties evolved by the Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) as first and second in trials of about 46 varieties.

It is learnt that the PSC has recently carried out experimental trials of 46 cotton varieties (from across the country) at its Khanewal agriculture farm area of around 100 acres.

Of the 46 varieties, the two branded as IUB-13 (BT) and IUB-75 (non-BT) have been declared first and second, respectively.

According to IUB PRO Shehzad Khalid, it was claimed that during the experiment the variety IUB-13 produced 40 maunds of cotton in one acre while the per acre yield of the IUB-75 variety was recorded as 31.73 maund.

These two cotton varieties had earlier been evolved in the agriculture college of the IUB after frequent experiments and its entries were submitted in the competition.

The IUB claimed that both varieties proved best due to their competitive qualities in experiments and trials in respect of high temperature, less required canal water and high resistant to the curl virus.

Owing to such qualitative credit and weather conditions, the two varieties are best suited for cultivation in vast areas of the south Punjab including desert zones of the country.

IUB Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Qaiser Mushtaq congratulated the teachers concerned for evolving cotton varieties of high yield.

SENTENCED: Anti-Terrorism Court judge Mian Khalid Arshad the other day handed down an imprisonment of 21 years with a fi ne of Rs100,000 each to two accused for keeping explosives and the material to make bombs.

The court also ordered to confi scate their property. Khanpur police had on May 2, 2012, arrested Muhammad Shakil alias Abdullah and Bashir Ahmed alias Shabro alias Alam and recovered explosives from them in Khanpur.
