Welcome to Dawn.com’s live coverage of the highly-anticipated Pakistan-India World Cup fixture. The Group B clash in Adelaide promises high-voltage action despite the recent fortunes of the two teams.

Pakistan is there not to win.
Umar Akmal keeping wickets?
Haris Sohail should not even be allowed to ball.
Indians are playing a very sensible game. Not missing any opportunity for singles.
Afridis of Pakistan only believe in 6s.

If Pakistan loses I will not be disappointed a bit. Dropping in form Sarfraz, from an already crippled batting lineup, shows the amount of merit done in this country. This bunch of XI does not deserve a win. Yunis, I hope you proved your point for selection by wasting A batting position yet again. Umar Akmal dropped Kohli and some part of me was relieved. Well played India. Better side has won. Pakistan will never learn. The problem is not with Umer or Maqsood or the selection committee or the coach. The problem is with our domestic infrastructure that is not producing quality players anymore. One can argue about the team selection but I am sure this was the best possible 11. Those left out of the side would not have done any better.

Man... .lets do one thing.. lets divide the indian team into two groups, one a Indian Batsmen Group(A) of 6 players and indian bowler group(B) of 5 bowlers.
Similarly lets divide the pakistani team into two groups, one a pakistani batsmen group(C) of 6 players and pakistani bowler group (D) of 5 bowlers.
Then lets mix up these groups.
Group (A+D) would become the strongest team ever seen in cricket history and would easily beat south africa and australia.
Group (B+C) would become the worst team ever in cricket history and would easily be beaten by all club teams, leave alone bangladesh and ireland.

Pakistan team never deserved to win this match, not even before start of the match. We must congratulate India as the deserved Winners. Ours is a weak team specially after loosing Ajmal, Hafeez, Omar Gul and Junaid. And then we have some selectors who have stupid idea's of playing Younis and Yasir while they could have had Fawad Alam and Said Ajmal instead of them. Let me also salute Younis for his stubornness ad insistance to play ODIs while he himself knows that not a single pakistani of the 180 million wanted him in this team. Shame on him for hurting Pakistan's cause only for his ego and money.

Congratulations India. Even though Indians were 20 to 30 runs behind, I was confident that Pakistan will find it tough to chase down and I was totally shocked to see Younis Khan open the innings. When he departed and the slow run scoring of Shehzad, I was pretty confident that Pakistan will not chase it and I was right.
The wickets of Shehzad, Sohaib and Umar in quick succession is the main cause for the downfall of Pakistan. I thoroughly enjoyed this match. Btw, Afridi should play sensibly. You cannot throw your wicket in a world cup match. Score a blistering fifty is not important, but to play like Virat or Misbah and then launch your attack when you have scored a decent 40 odd runs.

I really wish Pakistan had won the match! Would have been a national morale-booster.
Time for India to make a big mark in Olympics in all sports...too much of this cricket for too long!
Would love to see an Indian making a mark in marathon or gymnastics or swimming!
Will happen sometime I am sure.:)

This match could have been won, had Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi would have played sensibly and with responsibility like Misbah? The total was doable and achievable. Most of the people have commented that Younus Khan should gracefully retire without any pressure or the time will come that he will be kicked off from the team. Please realize Mr. Younus Khan!

Congrats to India. They played all round cricket and won. We have only one batsman in our captain and the rest are pretty ordinary, can't lift their game when the situation demands. Throw this umar akmal and Younis khan out and LALA you will never mature as a batsman. Frustrating.

(1) Younis Khan should be ashamed of himself for insisting to play in the ODIs.
(2) Moin Khan should have been fired 4 months ago when he selected the team for UAE series. He should be ashamed to know that a common fan has a much better knowledge of the game than these illiterate ex players. Younis, Yasir and Ehsan should never been selected. When Hafeez was sent back, Ajmal should have been called. End of Moin now, he has lost everything since he became selector.
(3) Shaharyar, although he is a powerless dummy chairman but he must go too for guaranteeing Younis a place in the squad even before selection process started.
(4) Najam Sethi, for God sake get of our back.
(5) Congrates to supurb indian team and their fans. May you win the Wc (as we won't go even next round).

Well played Pak. Dont despair my Pak friends, there are a lot of matches left for you to show your potential. May your team use this defeat to channel your energies in the right direction. Misbah is an amazing guy, I always liked him so much. I wonder why he'l so derided by Pak fans.
It was a good win from Indian point of view since India has been down under for the last 3-odd months without a win. This will give them confidence boost.
I wish there are at-least 3 teams from the sub-continent in the last 4.
All the best to all (also to the Lankan-Lions, Bangla-tigers and the Afghans).

I think Pakistan had a golden opportunity this time, it was the weakest ever Indian team you could face. You will never face that much weak team from Indian perspective, as even we were scared this time. Imagine a World Champion Team without Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh. Still India crushed Pakistan, Our TIGERs are are really World Champion !! I m proud of them and hope the same for Indian Hockey Team in future.

Pakistan should concentrate on fielding also as Indian fielding was good but we have to take example of NEW Zealand. Our players run after the ball or ask other player to run when they cannot reach. It is high time that we should field well if we want to be in the game and get rid of Younus Khan.

I have one big Question to Mr. Misbah. Why does he plays all the big shots at the end of innings, if he plays these big shots in the middle of the innings then the pressure goes directly on the opponents. And the biggest shame is Younus kha. Ahmed shahzad has to learn how to build an innings from India players, not to lose your wicket when it is needed the most. If Pak plays with Sarfraz instead of younus, then i think we have some 30 - 40 runs advantage.

This is just the first game and we Indians should not go overboard. We have to improve our performance to defeat the top teams - England, Australia, SA, and win the Cup. Afridi don't let the door hit you on your way out. Big players, win big matches! This is your fifth WC. You've been an utter disappointment, and utter failure on all big occasions, and today was no different.
And in a way Pakistanis deserve it
Every kid with a bat wants to be the next Afridi in the country. This is how badly his glorified mindless slogging has polluted the street cricket culture in Pakistan and overtaken the importance of being a proper attacking batsman a la Miandad, Inzamam style, in the eyes of aspiring youngsters. Good thing he's leaving Pakistan cricket, it is about time, PCB invest some money in proper advertising and awareness campaign that aims to revive the names and services of proper batting legends for the new generation to look up to.

Too much debates in TV channels, lot of comments and suggestions by cricket pundits, overconfidence of country men, blind anti Indian sentiments, underestimation of Indian team and over hype of Pakistani teams ability to beat India by the followers back home gave immense pressure to the team. The players and the team members really wanted to live up to the expectation back home which made them tense. That is the reason. Don't call for Misba,s blood, poor man did his best as a captain and player. All the best Pakistan for next time.

If not this time, then next. But win is inevitable. Team was good, but planning needed some attention. You us khan should have gone down as no 3, not opener. His getting out left too much pressure on Afridi. Bowlers, did not change line, length and pace, when runs were being given away. This match was lost simply due to unwise strategy and tactics. India just played good cricket.

Pakistan's loss to such an Indian team (perhaps the weakest in the last 2-3 years in 'away' conditions) and making it 6-0 in WC matches in favour of India, shows 2 things: 1) Good cricketing system in India 2) It is 'all-in-the-mind'. Time for Pak to set its home in order and give justice to its huge talent.

If India did not win against this second string Pakistan team, it would have been a shame.

The tournament is wide open till the quarter finals. Pakistan has to work hard in all fields - bowling, batting, fielding - to stay as a contender of the Cup. The team that gives its best on the day and is helped by a bit of luck can emerge as the winner. We must not be misled by the hype created by the TV channels about Pakistani teams invincibility.
Its just a game, after all. We should be serious about more serious things.

Well played India - looked like they executed their plans perfectly. India should have been under pressure to perform, but looked like all the pressure was on Pakistan. We have some work and more planning to do. The player's minds should have been clear with such a batting pitch but we seemed confused, though did well to keep them to around 300 which was getable. No opening stand again, Misbah to the rescue again, too many silly shots played, too many dot balls, coudn't handle Ashwin for some reason, gave away too many easy runs in the middle overs. Tough on Yasir with India such good players of spin. He will have a better match against Australia, South Africa, West Indies.
All is not lost. Game against West Indies becomes crutial. Keep your chin up boys and forget the past and think ahead.

Extremely poor selection, poorly executed plan and most importantly way too many dropped chances.
Get rid of Younus Khan, give one more chance to Umar Akmal and find a way to bring Saeed Ajmal.
Play Sarfaraz at the top(Sarfaraz Dhokha Nahi De Ga), play umar Akmal(for last time) one down and they will see better results.
I would still say get rid of Umar Akmal and bring in Fawad Alam(I hope he will do good since now he will have mountain of pressure on him).

I think Irfan did bowl well ,he gave too many runs as well as Afridi.
In batting either Haris or Ahmed should have played a long inning as both got out after occupying the crease later Sohaib or Umer Akmal should played the part but I don't know when will they become reliable and consistent performers for Pakistan? especially Umer Akmal.
And we can not make Afridi understand after playing so much matches he is the same.
Pakistan bowling did well overall but they need to be more disciplined especially Irfan,Afridi, and Yasir.

@kashmiri The Best Team won! India did not look strong however on field they were spot on. Unbiasely watching India batting, I found Misbah made mistakes by choking his bowlers despite they were getting no help. Irfan was made to bowl 7 overs, instead he could have been brought back for a couple of overs between 20-30 overs. Catches went down as Kohli was given nearly 3 lives like Sachin was given 4 in last world cup. Indian bowlers looked weak on the book but their bouncers, short deliveries and spin on a non spinning track was quite effective. Respect for Misbah for once again standing alone and trying however feel sorry that Afridi and Misbah would now retire without being able to break he jinx.

This match revealed several deep flaws with Pakistan team :
1. Afridi is past his best-by date and has been for last 10 years. Occasional flashes have let him keep his place in team but now surely he has to retire after this tournament.
2. Irfan is always unfit and seems to be struggling towards the latter part of his spells. This suggests weakness with his physique. This cannot be improved as has been seen over the past so many years and its time he is put to pasture. Just because he is over 7 feet tall doesn't mean he is a good bowler. Marshall was about 5'8' inches but the most feared fast bowler amongst his contemporaries.
3. Misbah is still a better batsmen/fielder than about 90% of the team, despite his age.
Hopefully the team can improve as the tournament progresses. It is better to take your loss earlier than to lose later in the latter games.

- Indian cricket team is stronger than Pakistan

So what Jinx? - pakistan simply lost to a far superior India team - simple.

Pakistan lack wicket taking bowlers currently..plus our fielding as usual was bad yesterday the dropped catches of Kohli made a difference, otherwise India could have been contained < 300
The other big difference Indian batsmen rotated strike easily ...poor bowling & field adjustments by Misbah & company e.t.c...while Dhoni was very smart adjusting field placements and suffocatting both Sohail & Shezad (both at one stage were scoring well) in the middle of the innings. Indian spinners bowled a lot better than Pakistan
300 was always going to be a tough chase especially knowing Pak batting limitations. Everyone talks about 92 WC ...but we had great wicket-taking bowlers like Wasim,Mushtaq and Aaqib...and batsmen like Maindad,
Imran and Inzi..in present team unfortunately we dont have anyone of that caliber either in bowling or batting so this result is predictable.
There is no shame in admitting we are not a good balanced team currently either in bowling or batting. On present form & team, Pak may only be good enough to beat UAE sadly. Unfortunately, we did not plan well for the WC ahead of time either. Players like Younis, Afridi and Akmal are not a good fit for this WC in Australian/Kiwi conditions and are hurting the balance of the team but unfortunately our culture is such that folks are selected based on seniority and nepotism rather than merit and taking into account playing conditions in Australia/Kiwi

Pakistan team please watch how score of West Indies of 300 plus is being chased by Ireland team.At least learn from associate members of ICC how to bat and pace the innings. There two batsman in Succession doesn't goes out for 0 and there opener doesn't goes out for 6 like Younis khan.Pakistan had lost WC day they selected wrong team members.

Boring match. Not much excitement in India for cricket due to unpopular BCCI, Dhoni and our arrogant players. Yes we beat Pakistan but its just a game, no big deal. Winning losing is part of it. Contrary to the past years, the malls and cinema houses were full which means only the die hard cricket fans were watching the match. New generation youngsters are not into Cricket much and an India-Pakistan league match does not mean much for them. I have heard that the number of kids taking up the game in large cities has gone down substantially in the recent years and as a result, BCCI is looking more into the rural places and small cities.

Sorry for pak fans, the reality is poor batting. If they struggle against a near empty indian bowling attack, they are very unlikely to survive south africa and australia. Many bad decisions including going with younis and afridi is a fluke player. He has faired well against kenya, zimbabwe etc., but cant put off a full-toss. He needs to retire.. pakistan should encourage young talent and revamp their batting big time. wahab & sohail were good - but indian batting is too strong in this instance atleast..

@Zak_ka_baap I totally agree.There is NO jinx.
I haven't followed cricket in years, but even a very cursory look at the Pakistanis tells me that they have lost all professionalism/
They seem to be involved in betting scandals, something seems to be working against them in selection, and there seems to be a lot of intra team politics ...one thing or another!
I am sure that Pakistan has got plenty of talent and with a bit of firefighting the team should be back on it's feet again.
Jinxes or soothsaying or pointing fingers is not going to help?

In my book there is no such thing as jinx, more like incompetent management, incompetent bowling, incompetent fielding and of course incompetent batting. They seem to have lived up to their expectations. We need to reward them appropriately, what better than a kick up their backside. Start afresh with a clean slate and this time keep the political gundas well away from the gentleman's game.
