KARACHI: Former paceman Shoaib Akhtar labelled captain Misbah-ul-Haq “a coward” and “a selfish player” after Pakistan were crushed by 150 runs by West Indies in the World Cup on Saturday.
“I have not seen a more coward and selfish captain than Misbah,” the 39-year-old Akhtar told a private TV channel.
“He is not willing to bat up the order to protect the other players at a time when he needs to show inspiration.
“He is happy with his own runs and I don't know what coach Waqar Younis wants. He has no game plan or direction for the team,” added the man known as the Rawalpindi Express, who won 46 test caps and played in 163 one-day internationals.
Misbah, 40, has been a successful test captain since taking charge in 2010 and has also led the one-day squad since 2011.
He batted at number five against West Indies in Christchurch on Saturday but made only seven as Pakistan were bowled out for 160 to slump to their second straight defeat in the competition.
Former test captain Ramiz Raja also believes it is time for senior batsman Younus Khan to step down after failing in the opening two World Cup matches.
“I beg of Younus. Thank you for your services to Pakistan cricket but please leave this ODI side now,” said Ramiz.
“I think Younus should tell the management he should be rested. Our fielding has also been a joke but we need just one good match to get back on the winning track.”
Another former captain Mohammad Yousuf called for wholesale changes to be made after the World Cup.
“The problems ailing our cricket will not go away unless we produce better batsmen and the management is reshuffled,” Yousuf said.
Former test spinner Saqlain Mushtaq was also scathing in his criticism.
“We went to pieces against a West Indies side hit by internal issues so what can we expect from this team in the remaining games?,” said Saqlain.

I agree with Akhtar. Misbah should have been fired after Pakistan's loss to India in 2011 world cup.For those who have short memories, I would highly recommend to watch that game again and see how he made sure to put team in a sure lose situation. Instead he was rewarded with leading the team. He may be a good player for test cricket but he sucks when it comes to one day cricket. He is not a leader, he is a coward and I hope this is the end of it for Misbah.

There is no captain in the Pakistan Team currently... everyone thinks they are their own captain. If senseless cricket is being played surely there must be a leader held responsible. So I guess the leader than becomes the coward captain and presumably the leader is accountable to PCB. PCB is just another bureaucratic division without care and worry answerable to none.
Let's all play tape ball cricket at home and not have to worry about the cowards and PCB... at least we will all get selected on merit.

@Adnan and the great Imran kept insisting Inzamam go up the order and lead the fight rather than captain the Titanic. Also, it was the same Imran who kept saying Inzamam as a captain was ordinary and that Younus should follow.
The only reason for citing Imran is that my words would probably have fallen on dead ears. Anyway, Mosbah's role is to anchor the innings and bat through. But he shies away from it. No other logical explanation.

Attack the (only) one who has been consistently performing. This seems to be the approach of the past pak players - blame Misbah, Najam Sethi, Shahyar khan, Waqar and even Wasim Akram, who seem to care a lot for Pak cricket. Some times these sort of losses happen to the best of teams. Pak can bounce back with the next win.

Not a coward, but Misbah really needs to stamp in his authority. Drop younis, bat up the order at no 3 and deal with the team as leader not as an assistant of Waqar Younis appointed to set the field in the match according to the plan.

Apart from 1999, World cup where he played some kind of a role, he has no World Cup Pedigree. He was part of teams that exited at Group Stage in 2003 and 2007 ( so embarrassingly ) and wasn't a core part of 2011 Set up.

Its times like these I think why is it true greats like Saeed Anwar dont come and give their opinion..after all they played cricket for such a long time. Look at these guys, players I had respect for Yousuf, Saqlain and Akhtar all spreading bad vibes everywhere. What is their issue? Keep quiet your time is done. hypocrisy at it's best. Instead of asking the whole team to perform better. Ask Misbah to change he's position. Don't you see, as soon as Misbah loses he's wicket, the opposing team knows they have won the match. That's how the world sees Pakistan. Waqar and Younis Khan should quit. Waqar was just a good bowler, that's it. He has no game plan in he's life and now he's personal limitations have come to haunt us too.

Nothing will change even if you bring some other players. Problem is PCB who has for 7 years now, not sent our A-TEAMS and U19 to play series in any other test playing nation. Home grown players who never ever train on bouncy and swinging wickets will face the same fate. PCB should have A-teams touring Australia, NZ, England and SA so that players like Sami Aslam, Baber Azam and others can learn to play on these wickets.

Internal PCB politics and hunger for the PCB chair by MR. Sithi are all to blame for these loses.
Also bowler were not bowling cleverly, if they start pitching slow bowling then they keep bowling slow deliveries even though they getting sixes and fours.
Batsman were really scared to face the ball. They were look like a club level batsman. No team spirit seen the matches.
Coach Waqar, captain, and management should resign after this shameful defeats..

it is sad that we have diverted all our guns towards players. modern day cricket is not played only by players. management also has a role in it.
beside, if we justly look at our team during its build up for world cup, we will realize that its not all their fault.
saeed ajmal and hafeez r sidelined for bowling action. they provided lot of balance to team. then their had been problems of injuries. they also dont play any matches at home. they r not allowed to play in IPL.
yes, they r well paid but compared to indian team players, i think they r still paid less.
yes, the defeat was bad but considering the problems we have in our country; it is not the cricket team that is failing their job.
in our country, judges who r paid to serve justice, do everything less justice. MPs r elected to do law making and they do everything beside law making. LEAs r paid to ensure our safety but we r not safe even in our mosques. there r so many worse failures which need more of our attention than a loss in a game
the same players, when they click, bring joy in our otherwise tedious lives.

Misbah should be ashamed of not playing at all eleven positions. The whole Pakistani team was defeated and disgraced. The officials, coaches and others cannot come and play in place of our highly rated and highly paid players. It is not a matter of one or two decisions by the captain but the whole team collapsed. Leadership counts in close encounters. While we have one aged and slow Afridi the opponents have several of them and young. Let young spinners play instead of those who have taken less than one wicket per game.

While I may agree that Misbah is too passive, using derogatory language can only come from immature man like SA. You have to understand the context too,look what Misbah has inherited. A corrupt dysfunctional team. Truth be told Im surprised he has stayed and not just called it quits with a bunch of useless unprofessional. Shoaib was never involved in fixing and was there for the team at the end of his career when he was clearly struggling (limping) with fitness and Pakisan needed a bowler.

PCB does not have the scope or mandate to promote grassroots (read intermediate/college) cricket in Pakistan. That's done rightly at the provincial level. Problem is: our school and college cricket is poorly organized to the point of being nonexistent. Tape ball 'galli' cricketers are simply not going to work in the modern power-packed game. I marvel at the physiques of the likes of Finch, Warner, McCullum, Russell, Sammy etc. and wonder how on earth are our pencil-necked players supposed to compete. For a while we survived with tools like the 'doosra' but even that option is gone now.

@Fawad Alam - Couldn't agree more with your comments. All institutions in Pakistan are crumbling due to corruption and nepotism but no one on the top cares. For example, the only qualification Najam Sethi has is that he helped Nawaz win the 2013 elections by rigging (35 punctures!). The only qualification that the previous PCB chief, Zaka, had was that he was Zardari's friend. So, what do we expect from these corrupts. To them, these institutions are meant to promote their own agendas and the national interest is definitely not part of the agenda.

It is unfair to blame the captain for everything that is falling apart. When the fielders have slippery hands- at least 4 catches were dropped; when bowlers are wayward with their line and length- hurricane 42 runs in 13 balls by Russel; when most of the top batsmen are irresponsible and clueless- 4 down for 1 run, how do you blame the captain for the debacle.
This current team is simply overrated and unduly pampered, probably does not represent the best cricketing talent available in the country. For future select the players purely on merit, and the ones who are seriously committed. Weed out the aging stars, believe in youth and no compromise on fitness, whatsoever.

I think Shoaib and Ramiz have raised a valid point. Misbah MUST come up the order. He is the one in form, has confidence and the technique. He is the leader and MUST lead from the front and protect the youngsters. Batting was never Pak's strength and Misbah must be an Imran Khan who came up the order in 92 world cup or Wasim Akram who sent Abdul Razzaq for blunting the swing in 99 world cup. IF there is one player who can do this in the Pak batting line up, it has to be Misbah. And Ramiz is SPOT ON as always. Younis Khan has no future in ODI's. If you can't face a bouncer and pace, that too in Australia in a world cup, you don't deserve to be there... So both are right on this occasion

@Irfan if you have short memory you should watch the 2007 T20 where pak was 76/7 and single handedly took them to 153 but couldn't cross over the line. He was our best batsman with the best average. The best asian batsman average outside of asia. He is our most consistent batsman and you want him fired????? What about the other 10 players who don't perform at all???

I totally agree with Ramiz - Younis Khan pleaseeeeee leave us alone, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!. And, not only should Misbah come at no. 3, but Haris Sohail (based on his solid technique and ability to defend) should be sent in as opener with Shehzad. Younis Khan should give way to Sarfaraz. That will solve two problems - we will get a better batsman than Younis and a better wicketkeeper than Akmal. My 11 for next game and strictly in this order - Shehzad, Harris, Misbah, Maqsood, Akmal, Sarfaraz, Afridi, Yasir, Wahab, Sohail, Ifran.

Misbah is a great player---a very nice guy---a wonderful batsman---but he is no CAPTAIN material. He has no energy---no fire---he has no excitement---he can't light a fire in his players---he can't set the payers tails on fire---.
He is a must for the team as a batsman---but no place for a captain. So---Shoaib is right.

It was not as if all matches he played, he turned in great performances and Pakistani victory. We have very few gentlemen left in Intl cricket and Misbah is definitely one of them

If the same Pak team play under Afridi/Inzmam/Akram/Imran/ captaincy then surely Pak has won both the matches. Atleat one. Even if they lost,then they will fight more & more.
MISBAH has made Pak cricket defensive. He plays like test batsman of 1920-30. Waqar Yonus & PCB chief Shahrayar Khan does'nt support match winner allrounder SHAHID AFRIDI who know how to adapt conditions quickly. May I remind you that Afridi is our senior most player, but unluckily PCB always disgrace him.

Misbah seems like a nice bloke but he doesn't have any leadership qualities. Sorry but would have to agree with Shoaib, i myself have noticed time and again that Misbah seems to thrive in losing matches where the game is lost already and he comes out and bat for 50 odd runs thus showing everybody he is very consistent. He seems like he is playing for himself and at age 40 he feels like he could be thrown out any time thus he needs to score runs whether the team is in a winning or losing situation, mostly losing situations. He is extremely defensive at times and would just snuff out the soul from any good starts the players before him might provide. He is too nice to too many people thus there is no respect among players for him bcz he looks very weak by not taking hard decisions.

Yesterday, Sohaib Akhtar came on TV and started some bad language against palyers. I say, its not the players, its the failure of management. Sohaib say Sethi is a brave man, while Misbah is coward. I must say, its is the opposite. What Sethi has to do with cricket. Same with PCB chairman. Both Sethi and PCB chairman should made accountable through judicial commission and if found guilty, must be banned for life to hold any public office.

Shoaib Akhtar, not fair to blame Misbah or any other player. The continued fault lies in system and methodology. Are we playing in home? Players are stressed playing outside of country and away from families. Are our stadiums full of league matches, No. Our stadiums are locked. No nation can have its players playing as surrogates in other countries away from home countries. What stops us to play grassroot league cricket by thousands of cricketers like Indian Premium League. From a total of approximately 26000 cricketers playing in Indian 145 stadiums one Virat Kohli 26 yrs old is generated to level 22 centuries by Sachin. We need to blame ourselves not the players.

Whenever Misbah is captain, Sethi is given a controlling role in PCB. Umar Akmal is chosen for wicket keeping, Pakistani team cannot perform well. The reason is Misbah doesn't have a qualification to become a captain. Either he does not have brain or he doesn't want to use it. Sethi is a greedy person, he is not qualified to play a role in Pakistan Cricket affair. He is just there to make money for himself. if he was really qualified and sincere, he would have a clear vision how to improve our cricket team by identifying and selecting talented players. Umar Akmal's performance as a wicket keeper is pathetic and giving him wicket keeper's role is pure nepotism nothing else.

Folks, I think that the problem with Pakistan is in that they are NOT playing 5 bowlers! Come on , you need to play to your strength. Every team is scoring 300+ runs. The batters also need to show some application. The openers are pathetic. Misbah, for your country's sake, can you please bat up the order ? The feeling is equally bad. Shoaib Akhter finds a great opportunity to take his revenge from Misbah. The truth is that except for throw ball fast, he never showed any understanding cricket on the field. Therefore his comments mean nothing.
I do agree with Ramiz Raja that Younis Khan should admit that he is not for ODIs any more. He may have scored some runs in Dubai recently but we all know how shaky his batting remained despite the centuries he scored.
Misbah is proven successful captain and we can not discard him due to one or two bad performances. No one performs 100% all the time. What is the responsibility of other top order batsmen?

But when you have 1 for 4 score, Misbah was like one down and scored, I believe 7 runs. Against India his score was in 70s. Now, at the age of 41, the reflexes slowed down and facing the quicks would be a problem at one down. Some players were called for a late night out with Afridi. Some report about conflict with coach. All these eventually add up to cause disunity in the team. On the heels of losing against India, the loss to West Indies really showed that the team has been in disarray. Well all will change.

I have said it many times that Misbah is clueless as a captain. he is too defensive, does not know how to set the fielding, and when to make the bowling change. You don't need a gentleman as your team's captain. Use him as a batsman only, batting the way he scored his fastest century.
Waqar, a lethal bowler in his time, especially with his yorkers, yet Pakistani bowlers under his coaching hardly bowl any yorkers.

Being a player for the national team, Akhtar should have some manner before speaking street language for the captain who is still on the tour and trying to produce best results for your team. How about you Mr.Akhtar in the last world cup? Tendulkar smashed you so hard in first three overs that your captain was forced to take you out. You conceded many many runs in earlier overs. Asif Mujtaba was pathetic barring one or may two good innings at international level. The guy played 24 test matches ,did not score a single century and averaged just a shade over 24 runs per innings, with a pathetic strike rate of 28.
In one days he represented Pakistan for 66 matches and scored at an average of 26 runs per innings with a very slow strike rate of 63.

It is not about being from Karachi.
Our chief selector is from Karachi and yet he ignores such a crucial player who can rotate strike and is a very good fielder.
I think there are personal likes and dislikes at play which should not be tolerated at all.
Exclusion of Fawad from world cup squad should have rung the alarm bells and someone should have stepped in to ensure that such a rubbish decision was reversed.
Exclusion of Raza Hassan is also not understandable as he is such a promising spinner who is not overawed by big names and big teams as he proved in the T20 worldcup.
Junaid Irfan and Gul were all coming back from injuries, yet we did not give other bowlers an extended run in previous matches etc. till world cup was on our head.
As soon as Hafeez was banned from bowling, we should have played a replacement.
Hafeez is a very good all rounder but as a specialist batsman, he does not fit in the team. I think it is hats off to our batsmen who have performed so poorly that we even seem to miss Hafeez in the batting department!
