LARKANA: Paying homage to the late singer Sadiq Faqir in a literary reference held here at a local hotel by the Sindhi Adabi Sangat (SAS) Larkana and Qambar-Shahdadkot chapter, speakers said he had popularised Sindhi music by singing Sindhi poetry with a new style.
Addressing the reference, Jeal Oad, author of a book on the history of Larkana, said Sadiq’s contribution stood high as he had carved new avenues in singing the poetry of renowned Sindhi poet Shaikh Ayaz and other poets.
Sadiq Faqir remained secretary of the SAS Mithi and shot into prominence with his original compositions, he said and also lauded the singer’s humanitarian services.
Malhar Sindhi, acting secretary general of the SAS (centre), appreciated the melodious voice of the singer and said he was very much connected with the soil and its fragrance could be felt in his voice. He urged the Sindh culture department to establish an institute of art for singers training in Sindh in the name of Sadiq Faqir.
Sattar Hulio, secretary SAS Larkana, comrade Karim Baloch and Dr Munwar Kehar termed Faqir a talented singer who remained committed with his art and his popularity speaks of his links and connections with his admirers and lovers. They called for establishing a Sadiq Faqir Chair in the Sufi University.
They said credit went to Sadiq for his creativity in giving poetry a shape while singing, which most of the time left audience spellbound.
