NEW DELHI: An Indian bride has walked out of her wedding ceremony after her groom-to-be failed to solve a simple math problem, police said Friday.
The bride tested the groom on his math skills and when he got the sum wrong, she walked out.
The question she asked: How much is 15 plus six? His reply: 17.
The incident took place late Wednesday in Rasoolabad village near the industrial town of Kanpur in northern Uttar Pradesh state, local police officer Rakesh Kumar said Friday.
The groom's family tried persuading the bride to return, but she refused. She said the groom had misled them about his education.
“The groom's family kept us in the dark about his poor education,” said Mohar Singh, the bride's father. “Even a first grader can answer this."
Local police mediated between the families and both sides returned all the gifts and jewelry that had been exchanged before the wedding, Kumar said.
Last month, another bride in Uttar Pradesh married a wedding guest after her groom-to-be had a seizure and collapsed at the wedding venue.
The groom's family had not revealed that the groom was epileptic. While the groom was rushed to a hospital in Rampur town, the bride asked one of the wedding guests to step in and married him.
Most marriages in India are arranged by the families of the bride and groom. Except for brief meetings, the couple rarely gets to know each other before the nuptials.

And since am having some right now, halwa which is made on every Hindu festival atleast in UP and other areas of North is actually Persian / Arabic word...would you care to rename that as well!!!

@Charu Why not ?? If Indian names are replaced by Arabic & Persian in say Pakistan . For eg. Amarkot is known as Umerkot today , why because it was a local name (in their minds a Hindu name) & they wanted to give it an Arab name (in their minds Muslim) , so "Umer" instead of "Amar".

Reminds meof the frntic call I had years ago from a young colleague who has gone to meet up this youngman on his way from US to India with an intension to get an "employable' wife. She said she is calling me from the Ladies and asked me to help parllelise a piece of code he had just given to her, since she claimed that was her area of work in UK - she was secretary to a group that worked in this specialist area. I dictated the answer but asked her either to tell him he truth or get out sharpish with a goodbye.

@Insanely Atheist urdu was never spoken in areas now comprising pakistan. We speak hindi but write it in urdu script. If someone spoke pure urdu , no one will understand it other than people who have done MA in urdu. Most people in Pakistan does not recognize this as a fact.

THIS REALLY HAPPENED IN LONDON a few years ago. At a wedding the groom started demanding more dowry from bride's parents. The bride got up and announced that the wedding was off and then asked "is there any man who wants to marry me for ME AND NOT DOWRY". The best man, who knew the girl, said that he would. The grooms family and friends were asked to get out, vacate the wedding site and in several minutes marriage ceremony continued and they lived happily ever after. Indian brides are getting bold now, so Indian boys watch out.

@ GHANSHYAM dear friend, if Muslim nations like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan etc. can use Sanskrit suffix (stan emerged from the Sanskrit word "sthan" which means place) in their name, why can't we have Arabic names to our cities for our Muslim brothers. Whatever the reason, we can not deny our islamic heritage of which we are proud of also.
