Sarfraz the man again as Pakistan set quarter-final date with Australia

SYDNEY: Pakistan and the West Indies secured the two remaining places in the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Sunday after coming through must-win matches in the last of the tournament's group games.
The 1992 champions, Pakistan beat Ireland by seven wickets in a winner-takes-all clash in Adelaide. Earlier in Pool B, the West Indies saw off the United Arab Emirates by six wickets in Napier.
Pakistan v Ireland - As it happened
West Indies' win saw the 1975 and 1979 champions them edge out Ireland for a last-eight place on net run-rate.
The quarter-finals begin with Sri Lanka's match against South Africa in Sydney on Wednesday, while defending champions India faced Bangladesh in Melbourne on Thursday.

Australia take on Pakistan in Adelaide on Friday and fellow tournament co-hosts New Zealand play the West Indies in Wellington on Saturday.
The Ireland-Pakistan match took place almost eight years to the day since the Irish knocked the Asian giants out of the 2007 World Cup.

That defeat for Pakistan in Jamaica was followed the day after by the death of coach Bob Woolmer.
Sarfraz hundred
There was no repeat of Ireland's celebrated victory in the Caribbean as Pakistan posted their fourth straight win of this World Cup, including a victory over highly-fancied South Africa, after starting the tournament with two straight losses.
Sarfraz Ahmed scored his maiden one-day international hundred and Pakistan's first of this World Cup as they finished on 241 for three, chasing 238 to win, with 23 balls to spare.

Pakistan had dismissed Ireland for just 237 despite a century from Irish captain William Porterfield, who won the toss.
The opener's 107 followed Ed Joyce's 112 against Zimbabwe as the second Ireland hundred of this tournament.
Ireland, who had already beaten two Test nations at this tournament in the West Indies and Zimbabwe, found runs hard to come by with Pakistan's bowling at the 'death' especially impressive.

Porterfield apart, only Gary Wilson (29) got past 20 as left-arm paceman Wahab Riaz took three for 54.
Opener and wicket-keeper Sarfraz, who marked his tournament debut with 49 against South Africa, was again in fine form with the bat.
His hundred, his first in 38 ODIs, came off 120 balls including six fours.
However, there were farcical scenes towards the end of the match when, with Pakistan just a handful of runs away from victory, Umar Akmal blocked ball after ball to allow Sarfraz to get to his century.
Safraz and Ahmed Shehzad (63) put on 120 for the first wicket.
Pakistan then had a jittery spell, losing two wickets for six runs to be 126 for two.
Shehzad holed out off seamer Stuart Thompson, having faced 71 balls including seven fours before Haris Sohail was run out after being sent back by Sarfraz.

congrats everyone.......i think the best thing to witness in this match was how umar akmal defended 4 balls to give sarfaraz to complete his century AND and how sarfaraz then defended 4 balls to give umar akmal a chance to hit the winning AND to top this umar is from punjab and sarfaraz from khi......now i would like to hear comments from all thoese karachi wala's who propogate anti punjab sentiments on DAWN all the time......bottom line is we are all Pakistani's and untill and unless we dont realize that we can never progress.

Management has been proven right again sarfraz despite having the keeping gloves took less catches then akmal. Sarfraz is definitely not a opener he batted for the whole innings and not one six.
so please admit you the media were wrong

@zak Pakistan doesn't need spinner.You cannot win World Cup in Australia with spinner.Pakistan success has much to do with Pace quarters and Sarfraz Ahmed.They have been doing same what Clive Lloyd did to World cricket after 5-0 loss to Australia .West Indies introduced 4 fearsome pace quarter.At moment it looks like Pakistan has strengthened there ODI with successful guys from Test cricket like Rahat Ali and Sarfraz Ahmed.

Whether Bangladesh or any other team, The key to defeat india is by chocking their singles. They never take risky shots, make them take a risky shot by stopping their singles and then see their batsmen trying crazy shots to vent pressure.
The weakness of Indian team is absence of explosive batsmen like Devillers, MAxwell or Afridi. Once you cut the singles in first 20 overs they will not have anybody coming to rescue.

Message to Pakistan batsmen
Attacking is the best defence , dont let the opposition team bowlers to settle down, from the word go , Go for the kill, this is the only way to lift the cup.
Rotating the strike is must playing dot balls will put the pressure for the upcoming batsmen.
Defensive approach will not going to work especially with teams like Australia , Newzealand and SA
similarly message to bowlers they should go for the wickets not to stop runs and Misbah should give the attacking field to bowlers like irfan rahat and wahab.

I would have called them lucky if they had got in on run rate but that is not the case.

@syed it's not people of Karachi or Punjab to be blamed. Unfortunately this division suits Pakistani ruling elite and establishment. Because this ruling elite use state security forces, dominantly of Punjabi desent, to solve country's political issues. Just see in this country Kalabagh dam cannot be constructed because non of the other provinces trust Punjab. You cannot blame Karachi for this. Punjab has to think as a whole why rest of country has this perception.

next game will be true test of whether pakistan have momentum or talent. I highly doubt they have either. Its just that world cup format is bit misleading in the sense that you can win lot of games against easy opponents and get false sense of hope.
Same applies to srilanka who have been beaten comprehensively in both games that were of any significance but still seem to be on bit of a roll.
Even though SL have 50-50 chance against SA, Pak has only 0.5% to win in quarters.

Ireland does not have any noticeable bowling attack that and not enough score by Ireland probably helped. Pakistani fast bowler were superb. Against Australia it will be though with fast bowling.

But we make them a joke and insult them e.g. Waqar has been insulted in media for his decision against Sarfraz. Nasir Jamshaid is a talented boy, hopefully media and attitude of our public don't spoil such talent. We should encourage them and give them confidence. Well first of all congratulations to Pakistan for a great win. It is great to have all 4 south Asian teams in the QF. Having said that why should India be jealous of Pakistan? India defeated Ireland for loss of fewer wickets and in fewer overs. It has so far been undefeated and its performance against every team in the group has been better than Pakistan.

The spirit to go for a win, regardless of the loss of toss or the size of total put up by the opposition, is definitely commendable. Sarfraz, it seems, had already been conditioned for that and, pleasantly, it became infectious for a positive change in the mentality of the other players. Now, the momentum must be carried forward into the next round, which is a knock-out round by the way, so that a tough fight is always on the cards. Pakistan, with a positive mindset, is surely a handful for any team.
