KHAIRPUR: At least 13 people including women were killed and fifteen wounded in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck near Khairpur district's Setharja area on Wednesday.

Rescue and security teams reached the accident site. Locals assisted the rescue personnel in shifting the victims to a nearby hospital.

Commissioner Khairpur confirmed the death-toll while talking to mediapersons.

Nine persons died on the spot while the rest succumbed to their wounds later during treatment.

An emergency was declared at the Khairpur Civil Hospital where doctors said that 14 people had died and 15 others, including women and children, were wounded in the mishap. The doctors added that the condition of several wounded was critical.

Sources said that the driver of the fast-moving bus, travelling from Islamabad to Karachi, lost control of the vehicle which caused it to crash into a truck coming from the opposite direction. The collision caused both vehicles to overturn.

The sources added that the driver had lost control due to the dilapidated condition of the road.

Earlier in November, 58 people, including women and children, were killed and several others injured following a collision between a passenger coach and a truck near Theri Bypass area of Khairpur.

In another incident, 35 people were wounded when a bus overturned near Pindi-Bhattian area of Punjab's Hafizabad district.

The bus was carrying employees of a factory, including several women.

Rescue teams reached the spot and began shifting the victims to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Road accidents are frequent in Pakistan and claim several lives annually due to poor roads, badly-maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
