Threat to S Arabia will evoke strong reaction from Pakistan: Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif asserted that any threat to Saudi Arabia’s territorial integrity would evoke a strong response from Pakistan.
This was said by Nawaz while chairing a high-level meeting at the PM House to discuss recent developments in the Middle East and to examine Saudi Arabia's request to join the Gulf-led operation against Houthi rebels in Yemen, said a statement issued by PM House on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Adviser to Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Army Chief General Raheel Sharif and Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman.
Nawaz said Pakistan enjoys close and brotherly relations with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and attaches great importance to their security.
The participants of the meeting decided that a high-level delegation will visit Saudi Arabia on Friday to assess the situation. Khawaja Asif, Sartaj Aziz along with senior representatives from the armed forces will be part of the delegation in this regard, the statement added.
Earlier, the Foreign Office said Pakistan was examining Saudi Arabia's request.
Sartaj Aziz confirmed that top Saudi officials had contacted the Pakistani leadership requesting it to join the Yemen operation. A decision has not yet been taken, Aziz said.
He further said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had summoned a high-level meeting this evening to consult his close aides over the matter.
Earlier during the day, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam told reporters at the weekly media briefing in Islamabad that Saudi Arabia had contacted Pakistan on an emergency basis and extended the invitation to join the operation against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
She did not specify the details of the request made by Saudi Arabia to Pakistan but said that the matter was being examined.
Aslam said that the Pakistani mission in Yemen has been placed on alert and has been asked to keep in touch with the Pakistan community residing there.
"The Pakistani community has been asked to be ready for possible evacuation," she further said.
The Foreign Office spokesperson said that no decision has been made by Islamabad with regard to closing its mission in Sanaa.

Diplomatic sources told DawnNews that a top Saudi functionary has contacted the top leadership of Pakistan over telephone and sought Pakistan's cooperation in the offensive launched in Yemen.
Although Pakistani authorities have given a hint of cooperation, they told the Saudis that a final decision will be takn after consulting the military.
Sources also said the Pakistan permanent mission to UN is also being briefed on this latest crisis.
Saudi Arabia and Gulf region allies launched military operations including air strikes in Yemen on Thursday, Saudi officials said, to counter Iran-allied forces besieging the southern city of Aden, where the US-supported Yemeni president had taken refuge.
Gulf broadcaster al-Arabiya TV reported that the kingdom was contributing as many as 150,000 troops and 100 warplanes to the operations and that allies Egypt, Jordan, Sudan and Pakistan were ready to take part in a ground offensive in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia's SPA state news agency later said that five Muslim countries including Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Sudan want to participate in the Gulf-led military coalition against Shia Houthi rebels in Yemen.
They have “expressed desire to participate in the operation” against the rebels, which the kingdom dubbed “Firmness Storm”, the state news agency further said.

These latest developments follow a southward advance by Houthi militants, who are said to be backed by Iran, who took control of the capital Sanaa in September and seized the central city of Taiz at the weekend as they move closer to the new southern base of US-backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.
Iran condemns assault
The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned on Thursday the military operation by Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Arab allies in Yemen, state television reported.
It gave no further details.
Iran denies providing money and training to the Shia Houthi militia in Yemen, as claimed by some Western and Yemeni officials.

It will deepen the already rift between Shia and Sunni across the Globe, it is in the best interest of all Muslim to come together to put forward mechanism to solve the issues peacefully. Saudi and other kingdomeships failed in the dispensation of social justice and services to the common public. Why one tribe in a country took arms against the established government, contributed to the injustice, inequlity and prejudices that rooted deep in the government structure. It is not in the national interest of Pakistan to join the alliance of Sheikhs at for the long term impact.

Great opportunity for Pakistan to reclaim some of its lost swagger. Iran has stepped up the offences against Pakistani border and its people, we should loose not a minute to ensure are not being dared by a US stooge like Iran. As far as Pakistan is concerned we should steam roll them tomorrow. If this helps KSA then so be it. it also ensures our status as regional power is maintained and india will think twice before attacking Pakistan.

It would be an extremely hard decision for Pakistan. KSA should also realize Pakistan's situation who is already occupied at all ends. However, any technical, or administrative assistance is possible and there better be no physical engagement. This issue looks more sectarian than anything else. Pakistan has clear visibility of both sects at all levels in private as well as government sectors.

Sentiments aside, this is a precarious situation.
Alliances come at a cost. Besides if Iran can cook up a rebellion in the backyard of KSA, it can very well do it in Baluchistan. Joining an alliance against Iranian backed rebels increases probability of that happening.
On the other hand, Iran is expanding its influence rapidly, much to the alarm of GCC nations. I am not sure if they will refrain from interfering in Baluchistan even if we refrain from joining an alliance against Houthis. India-Iran nexus is yet another factor to be considered. Take into account critical assistance provided by GCC countries to Pakistan in our troubled times and you have got yourself a very complicated situation.
A very very very fine judgement is required here. Let's not choose on sentiments alone.

Pakistan must maintain its previous stand of playing a role of "Unifier" in the Ummah. Pakistan must not back out from its principled stand for the sake of peace, prosperity and the innocent people of Pakistan who have already borne the brunt of mistakes made in Afghan war by supporting the U.S. Consequently, the war which was not at all ours has now become our own war. Our internal as well as external position is precarious both in terms of security and politico-religious fronts. Yemenis are not our enemies then it would be better to distant ourselves from the Guld-led operation.

Pakistan is beholden to KSA for the billions of dollars in aid and the Pakistanis working in Saudi. Pakistan has no good reason not to join on her side. This is a real bad situation - its like figting against Iran a powerful neighbour.

Last time we helped the Saudi's we ended up with the Taliban and Al Qaida and a possible label as a terror sponsoring state.
To join the Saudi's will be a monumental mistake given that IRAN is our neighbor and we have a large (25%) Shia population in Pakistan that will see this as an attack on them directly!

Although I do not support divisions within Muslims but I think Pakistan should send troops to defend Saudi Arabia, it is Saudi's that support us in difficult times not Iran and this Houthi problem is created by Iran so Saudi's have every right to defend themselves and Sunni Yemens, after all Iran has sent troops to fight Islamic state when they felt threatened so why should Saudi Arabia stop? Pakistan's stuck between a rock and a hard place. Remember what happened to Yemen when Ali Abdullah Saleh (the then Yemeni president) decided to side with Saddam Hussain during the Gulf War. Saudi Arabia, as ruthless as it is, deported every single Yemeni living on its soil, resulting in an exodus of hundreds of thousands who went straight to Yemen, shattering the Yemeni economy and it hasn't recovered ever since.
Our relationship with Saudi Arabia is way more important than with Yemen. If we are to take sides, it has to be with Saudi Arabia, after all its the land of the Two Holy Shrines, and protection of that Holy Land is a top priority for all Muslims.
If we are to take part in this war, Pakistan should put a price for its services and efforts. Pakistan should ask Saudi Arabia to invest heavily in our energy, health and education sectors.

Yemen is destabilizing faster than anybody thought. If the Houthi rebels take control of Yemen this means they will be at the border of Saudi Arabia. At the same time they will be at the door of other gulf countries (UAE). This is an alarming situation as it is going to effect Pakistan as well. Those Pakistanis working in middle east will be affected as well.
Since we have a very close relationship with Saudi Arabia and UAE we have an obligation to help them in this crucial moment.

Direct action against any group in foreign country may annoy some of our friend countries. Saudis gave 2billion to Pakistan in aid. I was speculating why was S. Arabia so generous for us, but now every thing is crystal clear. Honourable PM Sahab first set your home in order then think about others.
