LAHORE: Residents of Ichu Gill, a locality in the outskirts of provincial metropolitan, will start getting biogas supply next month from the plant constructed by Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC).

“The plant will help fulfil the need of almost 200 households on a marginal cost,” LWMC Managing Director Khalid Majeed said during a visit to the site area on Saturday.

Work on the plant was initiated by the LWMC in July last year and completed at a cost of Rs14.9 million. It would produce biogas from green waste and animal refuse being abundantly produced in the Ichu Gill.

LWMC would operate the plant initially for the first year during which selected community members would be trained and afterwards the plant would be handed over to the local community along with operational responsibility.

“This biogas plant is considered to be a model plant as its construction has led to replicate the plan in other rural areas of Punjab as well,” said Mr Majeed. Biogas plants in Dunyapur, a distant city of southern Punjab, would soon be inaugurated while process of installation of biogas plants in Chiniot city was under way, he said.
