Jamshed, Umar Akmal likely to get the axe for Bangladesh series

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) selection committee is expected to finalise the squad for the Bangladesh series today, with opening batsman Nasir Jamshed and the mercurial Umar Akmal set to get the axe after their World Cup flops.
Under the chairmanship of newly-appointed chief selector Haroon Rasheed, captains for all three formats will also be giving their input in the meeting at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
While it is expected that the limited-overs squads will wear a similar look to that of the World Cup team, Akmal and Jamshed are the two players who will most likely miss the Bangladesh trip.
During the World Cup, Akmal managed to score 164 runs in seven matches at an average of 23.42, whereas Nasir Jamshed could only manage to score five runs in three matches.
Left-arm pace bowler Sohail Tanvir may also be dropped despite giving a good performance in the Twenty20 format against New Zealand in December 2014.
The meeting of top PCB officials in Lahore is also expected to devise new central contracts for players.
Pakistan is to play two Test matches, three One-Day Internationals and one Twenty20 International against Bangladesh, for which team's training camp is likely to commence from April 6.

Umar akmal is a great talent. He needs to improve his shot selection. With some coaching he should be fine. I believe he should be persisted with. Agree with Nasir being dropped. Even if he scores he should not be in the side unless he learns first how to even run.

The PCB seems following same old pattern: pick new boys for new series and after the failure of a few, drop them, and include the same old back in the squad calling them experienced.
Please stop judging the players by their techniques and start judging them by their performance in the domestic, if you really want to deliver something.

Akmal brothers will get a call when Abdul Qadir, our ex spin wizard and father in law of Umar akmal is appointed chief selector. Regarding Nasir jamshed and Sohail Tanvir, only mentally retarded selector will select these two spent forces. Dont take Bangladesh lightly. They are at par with Pakistan , both reaching quarter finals together.

It will be one of the big mistakes if they drop Umar Akmal. (1) Why drop someone who is part and parcel of our team and who, if dropped will anyway come back in the next series. You need to manage him better (2) In our batting line of test styled batsmen, Umar is the only match winner type together with Sarfraz (3) Umar is one of the better fielders (4) Umar should come at no. 4 and for the first time be allowed to bat without the pressure which Misbah's slow batting has always put on him to play airborn shots. Let him build his innings and put clear-cut orders for him to only play ground shots. (5) Even your greatest players like Inzimam, Yousef and Younis have never performed down under then why sack Umar for that?

Based on current performances Shoaib Maqsood, Umer Akmal, Nasir Jamshed and the rahit coporation who dropped a sitter should be kicked out from all formats. Very good. The sooner we get rid of incompetent and butter fingered Jamshed the better. Similarly Umar Akmal is the worst "so-called" finisher in the history of ODI cricket. He just cannot finish a game. All he can do is score sublime 20s or at best 30s. Similar to Hafeez but Hafeez more than compensates this with his bowling (genuine all rounder). What baffles me though is what is keeping another totally pedestrian fielder and Umar Akmal type player, Sohaib Maqsood. In order to merit a selection, the FIRST requirement should be an ability to field properly, meaning, you should be ready to dive, slide and should be able to take 95% of the catches that come your way. Once you know a guy can field, you should then judge him by his speciality, bowling or batting.

I am sure they will be back in the next series. This is how the PCB and selection committee have played with the nation. They will never allow a real team building. They have never learned from their mistakes and they never will. They have made someone a captain who wasn't even the part of one day team since last two years. Is he good enough to play the one day cricket let alone the captaincy.

If they are dropped due to their poor performance which is quite evident than why someone has to force them into the side.... It is better we create a culture that promotes performance based selection.... we need to rebuild the team for next work cup just like India in fact they had even bigger challenges their original playing 11 were playing good cricket but than they saw new talent who can perform better than their senior players... they dropped their seniors and pick their youngsters...

In my opinion Cricket Board should avail International Coaches for our Junior Players i.e under 16, Under 19 & A team etc. Senior players could not change their style and attitude. A big amount spent on International coaches for training and planning of our Senior team, but we could not get result due to above mentioned reason.

Why drop Umar, why not put up a plan and work on making him a match winner ... Of course our selectors find it easier to drop someone on poor performance, rather than do the hard work of grooming a blooming talent ( which everyine, including the international obervers admit ) ... This shop and chop policy would never work... Management needs to bite the bullet of someone short coming and put a plan to work hard to grooming the talent. Steven Smith was considered a liability on team and a laughing stock in the last world cup and see where he stands now... Once you spot a talent, stick to it and work on grooming it.

Oh, I think I know the answer. He belongs to a well off family which is unusual for Pakistani cricketers. His father paid a huge amount to the selectors to include him in the team (in spite of Shan's talent and performance). He performed reasonably well. However, he was asked for more money. Until then he was sent away from the team.
Don't know what the current status is. Will his father be filling the selectors' pockets again?

wrong decision regarding Umer Akmal. He is the most talented batsman currently in Pakistan squad. Yes he had a bad world cup down under but who dint. Besides Misbah and Sarfraz no one scored. Ahmed Shehzad is the biggest culprit. He is naturally an attacking player. That guy cannot play anything on the OFF side. The problem with Umer is that, he is an attacking fearless batsman. he has all the shots in the book. He has been pushed down the order throughout his career. More often that not when he ended up batting with Misbah on the crease. 2 opposite styles of batting. Have him play up the order and if he still fails, by all means get rid of him.
Nasir by all means, he should not be allowed to play first class. I still cannot understand how he manages 3 centuries.

You can expect every unthinkable decision from PCB. Nothing worst could be done than dropping Umar Akmal. Yes he didn't succeed in Australia but neither did Ahmad Shehzad and Sohaib Maqsood. Even the all time greats, Inzimam, Yousef and Younis have their lowest averages in Australia. Umar Akmal needs to be managed right and should be played at no. 4.

Don't do the foolish by dropping him now that you have only a lot of tuk tuk players. Sure you will win in BD even with tuk tuks but think long term. Play Umar Akmal at 4 and ask him to build his innings by avoiding flashy cuts and airy shots. He is a better fielder too. I would rather drop Sohaib and play Mohammad Rizwan.

Umer Akmal does not possess that intellect, and therefore is not capable of improving beyond where he is today. We need to accept that reality and move on.

PCB has commited a series of mistakes and now again they are going to commit two more mistakes. (1) If they place Azhar and Sarfraz in higher pay catagories than Shehzad, Umar Akmal and Wahab, they will be asking for a trouble in the team and (2) if they drop Umar Akmal instead of promoting him to number 3 or 4 and managing him better. Its the time to give Umar confidence and tell him to start a new fase where he builds his innings and avoids flashy cuts and airy shots.

Ahmed Shehzad should be dropprd as well. Include only guys who are physically fit, mentally strong and disciplined, have the right technique, and are willing and able to take and follow coach's instructions.
Once selection is made, the final fifteen should be filtered by the players fielding ability.

@Nawaz I do like the suggestion for Sami Aslam - he is lefty. I think Fawad Alam should be brought in. Not so sure about Azam - how did he do in local circuits? PCB did invest in Anwar Ali more and he had decent bat. With Wahab taking more responsibility - i think we will be fine so long as we have one hard hitting allrounder

@Syed, I could understand your concerns if we had a couple of Kohlis or Steve Smiths waiting in the reserves. Even with his mistakes Umar Akmal is still averaging 35 (higher than most) and has the highest strike rate. And do not forget that whenever he came to bat, you ask him to accelerate and score 7-9 per over, specially so after Misbah's crawling innings. Umar needs to be played at 4 where is no urgency to score fast and one can build an innings.

Younus Khan, Misbah and Afridi are out on retirement. Akmal and Jamshed are being dropped. Majority of the readers want Maqsood and Shehzad to be dropped. 7 news faces in a team? As an Indian I dont know much about the back up players and their performance in the local tournaments. As such I would suggest PCB to consider only such players who are disciplined. Discipline is one area where the Pak lacks a lot.

@Anila Umar is a fantastic talent, only way to groom him is in domestic circuit. Being a Sr member, he should bat whereever he wants and score big hundreds not just quick 60. A pakistani batsman should not be judged by his performance in australia as no one is good enough to score reguraly in that part of the world. Umar needs to control his aerial shots. In international cricket it is too big a pressure to learn. Domestic cricket is good to control angry young man attitude

We blame the players but what about the coach who insisted on selecting Nasir jamshed and Bilawal Bhatti and was dead against Yasir Shah, Sarfaraz and Wahab Riaz selection.
There are in-fact 14 selectors. six official appointed selectors plus Haroon Rashid, Misbah, Waqar Younus, Najm Sethi, Shaharyar Khan and Hamza plus Salman Shareef who sends their advise tghru Najm Sethi. The nation would like to know what message was brought by Haroon Rashid when he joined the final selectors meeting.
Thast message was to replace Fawad Alam with Sohaib Maqsood.

Good move Selectors must induct new talented players, there is no shortage of talent except youngsters don't get proper opportunity to display their talent. Akmal brothers and someother players have been given more chances then they deserve.

All window and doors should be air tightly closed for Akmal and Jamshed in cricket. Afridi and many more should be kicked out. Pakistan is full of alike Akmal, Jamshed Afridi and more.

Of all the comments, the most irrelevant are those who are asking Umar Akmal to play domestic before coming back. Pakistani domestic won't change or improve of a player who has played 110 matches on international arena. Nasir Jamshed had just scored heavily in the domestic before being added to the squad but the result of that is all to see. Umar Akmal still has an average of 35 with 85+ strike rate and is much better batsman than many others around. He is a match winner and just needs to be managed better and needs to play at 3 and build his innings without flashy shots. His being in the team is much more neccesary today when Afridi is gone.

Please include ahmed shehzad in the list too. He seem to have lost his confidence. Someone here mentioned Shahzeb Hassan, should have persisted with him as he was instrumental in us winning the T20 2009 WC.

Umar Akmal is like Younus Khan. Younus never scored more than 25-30 runs each innings in his initial 5 years. But it's high time Umar needs to target 80- 100.

In these hi tech times of finite stats and results oriented players, there is no room for sleeping on the job. The stats over rule everything, and the hard facts can't be disputed about a player's real time performance on every single level: from batting to bowling to fielding. With numerous charts, diagrams, etc., all a coach needs to do is simply and meticulously examine a player's stats and can then decide which player should play based upon MERIT - not based upon sifarish.
If Coach Waqar Younis had used some hard stats for each player along with his numerous performances before the WC in the UAE and New Zealand, he and other coaches would have been able to pinpoint with solid accuracy which players were solidly performing and were ready, willing and able for the WC 2015. Hopefully, when the next WC comes up, more Pakistan cricket coaches will do their homework and stand solidly by those players who have earned their place vs those who are non performers.

our batting line up can be strong if we have sarfraz, hafeez (alrounder) azher ali, fawad alam, harris sohail, asad shafiq, in it
Bowling should have wahab, junaid, muhmmad amir (soon), yasir shah or rahat ali and hafiz will also bowl 10 overs

A big chunk of blame lies with team management and Misbah for not requesting the right replacements and for not utilising the players selected. How come PCB ignore waqar's blunder of not playing Sarfaraz; why Younis Khan was dropped against australia instead of Umar Akmal/Sohaib Maqsood; why Yasir shah was ignored while Afridi played on with most disappointing performances
ahmed shehzad is just an over-hyped player like akmal; he only scored against minnows. Also i cannot understand how a sohaib maqsood with such poor technique can be termed as new Inzamam; he holds the record for getting out playing the ugliest of strokes. Maqsood, Akmal, Shehzad and Jamshed should be kicked out along with Waqar
we should have appointed hafeez as captain for one year and sarfaraz to take over from him after that

Umar akmal is best player than any other wrong are pak coaches like waqar younus and waqar wants to complete his wills and make his own team he is a completely flop coach if we compare umar akmal with other players in team so he is good in feildind batting and there is always wrong team management who try to bat him at 5 6 and 7 So i fell it is unfair his tallent and his batting

Pcb and Pakistan selectors whoever it may be never understand their cricketers always make stupid decisions. Umer Akmal is very talented cricketer and a very good fielder as well, he is always sent in very late in the order then how can he perform, more over most of Pakistan fielders very slow, Umer is very aggressive and sharp in fielding. He should be given a chance and send him up the order, he will perform and could be future captain too.

Who is responsible to make Umar Akmal a slogger by sending him on number 6 and 7. Misbah never tested him by sending number 3 or 4. Even Harris Sohail and Sohaib got promoted while playing few games for Pakistan. I think, team management never handled his talent properly. Sarafraz only got to show his talent when he played on top of the order. I see a big bais against Umar Akmal. I would like to see Sarfraz showing same performance at number 6 or 7. I think after 5-6 years, he never got a chance to show his real talent. SO SAD!

@Adnan - Denmark , I agree that Umar Akmal should be in the team, but I disagree that domestic circuit would not help him. No matter how rubbish pak donestic cricket is, it is 1000 times better than net sessions you do before international matches. All he requires to do is play selfish cricket by not throwing away his wicket. He needs to crub his impulsive behaviour. Mostly, I blame the captain and team management who could not groom him. What is required is patience and calmness in him, bat early and score tons of runs rather that a quick 45 with a strike rate of 100. He is talented and to become on of the greats he needs to respect his wicket
