Remembering Bhutto
Benazir Bhutto's personal photographer Agha Feroz released a rare collection of photos of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Published
April 4, 2015
This gallery comprises images of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto originally collected by Agha Feroz.
Agha Feroz was the personal photographer of the Bhutto family and mainly Benazir Bhutto and shared the same affluence as her till she was assassinated in 2007.
"There was a time when I traveled the world with Benazir in helicopters and aeroplanes, now I change two buses just to get to work. I never thought that my life alone would take a such a massive turn due to the demise of the Bhutto family."
In 2013, Agha Feroz paid tribute to the Bhutto Empire by organising an exhibit at the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Park, Karachi.

The point of this is what? Don't try to picture him like he was some type of a God given gift. Shah Nawaz Bhutto was a puppet of the British who gave him a chunk of land in Sind. British never gave any land to anyone in Britian. I could go on but what good will it do when one is dealing with ignorant, illiterate, ill mannered and corrupt people.

These pictures are rememberance of an era which would be a black spot on the face of Pakistan history, four years period of Bhutto were the land mark an example for coming generation, it would reflect that rest of period including ppp reign period was the sign of misgovernance, loot and corruption. The institutes which Bhutto had established did were long last for stability and economic progress of Pakistan, these all were ruined with corrupt practices of all comin governments, military rulers were much more looters.

Two things, I wish to mention about Z A Bhutto. Bhutto had a sister by name BENAZIR who died at an young age. She was very dear to him and her grave is in Pune, India. That is the reason he named his eldest daughter as Benazir. By the by, Nusarat is his second wife, and his first wife must have remained back in India. Secondly, when I saw President Zia Ul Huq celebrating Bhutto's death in the above photo, my mind went back to an old sketch by an European visitor, which depicts Aurangazeb celebrating the death of his brother Dara Sheiko.

Sorry, cannot remember him with good words. When he nationalized the industry, I personally witnessed small Indusry owners being evicted by his PPP goondas mercilessly. But no body could resist out of fear. Roti Kapra Makan was just a hoax while the slogan producer was getting his clothes laundered in Paris and his water was flown by air from Europe.
Sorry I will never remember him in good words. However I pray that he RIP>

Bhutto family is a family of power hungry people ready to sacrifice their lives for no cause except for getting rich to enjoy Western styles living by deceiving the people of Pakistan with catchy slogans and empty promises.
We should never forgive the family for breaking up Pakistan and inventing sectarian-religious and ethnic based politics and giving us a dynasty of greedy and corrupt politicians including the family members and others who become rich like the leader of the current House of senate and the CM of Sindh.

He was hanged unjustifiably, his three (Shahnawaz, Murtaza and Benazir) children were killed, wife suffered a lot, yes, he was a landlord, but see what he sacrificed, argue he may not be better than any other, but certainly he was not worst, please give the credit where due. Bhutto was the most intellectual leader on the south Asian subcontinent after the British empire. But his unfortunately his arrogance , and lack of wisdom, brought him down, further egged on by sycophants around him. After the coup, he calmly left back to his home in karachi. Elections we're going to be in 90 days, as announced by Zia. But then , Bhutto stupidly and unwisely, started to slowly give fiesty speeches as to how he would hang the Generals from the highest tree. He had signed his own death warrant. Had he just said, he was not going to hold anyone responsible, been amiable to Gen Zia, waited for elections, won it, then moved on with his governance. He would have been a hero to his nation and none of his family would have died unatural deaths.

When the image of a man grows bigger than his party he becomes a cult figure. In India fortunately we have such a living example in the form of Mr.Atal Bihari Vajpayee whose towering personality once dwarfed his own party BJP.ZAB was a visionary leader with exemplary leadership, diplomatic and administrative skills. He had love hate relationship with the army.People say he was autocratic and excessively harsh towards his detractors. But all such things can't justify his tragic end. As luck would have it Pakistan was deprived of using the services of this great statesman. This photographic memorabilia gives an excellent insight into the life of ZAB.There is still very limited literature which shows what clearly transpired between ZAB and his once blue eyed boy General Zia,how they fell apart and became sworn enemies.

@Saifullah Shaikh I became an admirer of Bhutto's intellect, but his policies took pakistan down economically. His nationalization made those institutions government departments , stuffed with political cronies. Pakistan steal went from a 100 crore surplus to 100 crore loss in 10 years. He ruined the 22 families who were driving pakistan to economic success internationally( Gokals were second largest ship owners after Greek tycoon). He should have made 22 families into 220,000 families. China was befriended in 1956 long before Bhutto. But no doubt, he helped in the Nucleuar establishment, Islamic leadership, and a world stage leader.

It's a common but wrong concept about break-up of Pakistan. Actually the breakup was a logical outcome of grievances & injustice faced by our Bengali brothers in East Pakistan. Unfortunately the Non-Bengali leadership at Islamabad (mostly Dictators) showed insincerity and non-seriousness in resolving the problems of East Pak. The Mass Rigging by Ayub Khan in 1964 Election to stop Mohtarma Fatimah Jinnah's win has further added salt in the wound and sufferings continues for almost 25 Years. Consequentially in late seventies separatist elements started gaining power through moral and material support from Indian intelligence services which has finally resulted in mutiny, massacre of Non-Bengalis by Indian Supported Militant wing of Mujeeb's party, Pak Army Operation in East Pakistan. India interfered in Pak matters and started war in late 1971. Since the support of Bengalis were not with Pak Army it was difficult to stop Indian Army's advancements toward Dhaka. Conclusively Indian Army entered Dhaka on 16th Dec 1971 to pave way for Bangladesh.

All this nostalgia is fine.
But remember also that he was the one that egged Ayub Khan to start Operation Gibraltar against India which led to the 65 war. After the failure of that war, Bhutto was politically smart to be able to shift the blame to Ayub Khan completely.
Secondly in 1971, after losing fair and square to Mujib-ur-Rehman, he got Yahya Khan to squash a democratically won election and initiate Operation Searchlight that led to the 71 war and the secession of Bangladesh.
And Thirdly, he was the one that started Pakistan Studies (the rewrite of Pakistani textbooks) after the fall of Bangladesh and brought in religious crazies before Zia took it to the next level.
Not saying that he was not patriotic but he was not the best thing that happened to Pakistan.

I came of age from that era and what I remember most about politicians like Z.A. Bhutto of Pakistan and Indira Gandhi of India was that they practiced a "take no prisoners" kind of approach to politics which, unfortunately, was what violently undid them both in the end.

Bhutto announced reforms limiting land ownership and a government take-over of over a million acres to distribute to landless peasants. The DISTRIBUTION never happened and Bhutto family added more land to their already vast property exceeding all limits.
Yahya Khan, after being released from house arrest after the 1977 coup had said, "It was Bhutto, not Mujib, who broke Pakistan. Bhutto's stance in 1971 and his stubbornness harmed Pakistan's solidarity much more than Sheikh Mujib's six-point demand. It was his high ambitions and rigid stance that led to rebellion in East Pakistan. He riled up the Bengalis and brought an end to Pakistan's solidarity. East Pakistan broke away.

I don't see Pakistan gaining anything from any of the rulers since the death of Liaqat Ali Khan....!!!

he was a great man if only because he was the first one to tell the poor people of Pakistan that they were human beings with rights like any others . That why the people still love him , though his many faults , and that is why the pakistani " high society "always hated him .

Bhutto was bold and brazen with sharp tongue and a brain of a genius. Such a person comes by once in a generation. I have been through almost two and have not seen one like him yet. He had, like any human being, weakness also but let us not judge him for that and remember him for the good he did for the country. I also believe that the dead should not be shovelled.

He was born the day he arrived in Lahore Railway station March 1966 his handkerchief auditioned for Rs 4,000 was raised him to the top of the world but again it were Lahorites who downed him to low of the lowest. In his life I find Raza Qussuri as a brave man who fought on his side as PPP regional leader but the day Journalists observed hunger strike with Raza Qussuri (1969)Bhutto went to peep into the hunger strikers' camp and asked them to end their hunger strike. But his lieutenant Raza Qasuri remarked that you should ask the owner of newspapers to accept the demands of the working journalists not the poor fellow to end their strike at this crucial moment. This enraged Bhutto and he instantly shouted on Raza that I expel you form PPP and Reza with equal force utter that I President of Lahore PPP expel you form the chairmanship of the party. And then the heroic funfair started that took Bhutto to the Gallo. I think besides some kidney problem Bhutto had high BP too?

Was he killed because East Pakistan was lost by him for failing to let Sheik M.Rahman be the PM of Pakistan.
This in my view thi was the revenge killing of him by the army because for their loss in war with India
and freedom fighters of East Pakistan.
I would like to know as to what has happened to all of the Bhutto clan?\How are they are doing?
The photograph of Bhutto women in saris is just stunning in my view. don't you agree ?

Tragic travesty against the only real leader and statesman Pakistan ever had, since Jinnah. If Nawaz Sharif could be exiled, so could have Bhutto. His death is a black mark on our nation and its people. Indelible and deep.

@mustafa ZAB was a decisive not devisive - took issues head on which eventually would have come in the way of Pakistan's progress - I am not ppp supporter but this man no doubt has picked up pieces of demoralized country and made a proud nation in his first tenure. if we would have given him another term we would have been a strong nation. I think one of the many biggest achievement is constitution. I hope you agree with me.

An ordinary mortal rose to power and fame because of his ancesestary. His speeches never testified his statesmanship. He was a loose tongue and rash in response. It is unfortunate however that he was hanged by a religious bigot out of vendetta.

Mr. Bhutto is the real founder of Bangladesh. Pakistan could be saved in the UNO in 1971 but he deliberated lengthened his speech so that the surrender could be possible. The so called "Speech" and tearing of the resolution presented by Poland was the greatest blunder in the history of Pakistan. The Polish Resolution was the last effort to avoid surrender. But he deliberately made sure that the resolution goes into pieces

Bhutto was a great leader of Pakistan, he gave Pakistan:
1. Nuclear technology which is also admitted by Dr. A. Qadeer. World is respecting Pakistan because of nuclear technology
2. 1973 constitution
3. Pakistan Steel Mill
4. The way he presented Pakistan’s point of view in UN no world leader did this so far.
5. He was hanged because he wanted to create Islamic leaders block and use oil as its weapon.

I totally agree with ZAK as he summed Bhutto up very well . I remember seeing LateMr Bhutto at my parents place in Dacca former East Pakistan when he was chairman PPP I must say I was young but so impressed with his dynamic personality that since then he was what I knew of great politicians but I can now sum up Bhutto very well that he did not know the meaning of the word PATIENCE if he had that he would have made a come back during the coup but his BIG mouth woke the Generals up.
Bhutto is no doubt embedded in all Pakistanis forever as a good, bad, or evil person.

When ZAB boycotted the opening session of the newly elected National Assembly after the 1970 elections, he gave Yahya the excuse to postpone the convening of the assembly and the rest is history. His role in the breakup of Pakistan is very serious and this makes him a very controversial figure in the history of Pakistan.

I am very sorry Mr. Agha Feroz and my heart goes out for you. I hope Dawn has paid you for your work, for what the Bhutto family did to you is the same they did to the millions of Pakistanis who supported them - a big nothing. The Bhutto family members and the extended family members along with the top leadership of PPP plundered the nation and build up huge foreign bank accounts and educated their kids with foreign accents, while the foolish supporters still stayed faithful and hoped for better - some of them still faithful to PPP but poor like you. The leadership of PPP is extremely well to do and rich - Shame on these people for using guys like you and not taking care of you. I am sure you have tons of stories to tell and document, please write about all the selfish people in PPP who say one thing and do the other.
