Jodhpur: The 'blue city' of India

It is not hard to see why Jodhpur, standing under the shadow of an ancient fort in the Indian state of Rajasthan, is known as the blue city.
The cobalt walls help keep the buildings cool during hot summer days. Locals say the distinctive colour was originally used by the highest caste of priestly Hindus, Brahmins, to set apart their houses. The rest of the population soon followed suit, turning the desert city into an oasis of colour.

When I see the pictures of common people, places and cities of Pakistan and India I could find hardly any difference between them except that the Urdu script is changed to Hindi and the mosques are replaced by mandirs/gurdwaras in Indian pictures.

Dawn, this is fine and all, but why not show more of Pakistan where we Pakistanis can actually go and visit? Balochistan stands unexplored, Sindh has so much to offer, Punjab has a very old and rich history, KP has some fantastic landscapes and GB can always be highlighted even more. Pluss, I would love to see more of Azad Kashmir and their people who really love Pakistan.

People other than Urdu Speaking add colors to their lives. For example, Sindhi, Gujrati, Rajhistani and to some extent Punjabis and Pathans. I know I am going to get a lot of flak for writing this, but to clarify I am pure Urdu Speaking; and the only color we know is White. Honestly, if I need to entertain my cat I put Daler Mehdi's songs, and if I need to calm her down; all I have to do is put Mehdi Hassan's Ghazals. (with due respect to Late Mr. Mehdi Hassan). I think us Urdu Speaking folks need to stop fighting with our own selves and start blending in and appreciating other cultures.

Men seem to be better dressed than women. To me entire town looks very very old and amenities look far from 21st century. Although this blue looks exotic in pictures, I am not sure how it would look like in reality.
May be I should create picture-stories of the city I live in. IMO, older parts of the cities need to be razed (leaving only monuments and historical places aside).

The beauty of the photographs hides the poverty, the pain, the helplessness, lack of sanitation etc. etc. etc. and it's the same story - whether it's India or Pakistan. For those living abroad who are saying"oh and ah and how much I miss India" (or Pakistan, if it was a city there)... they will never move back unless they have no choice but to do so (have to take care of parents or some critical situation).

I've walked the streets of old Jodhpur which lies right in the shadow of the fort. What you guys call "poverty" is the traditional way of lives for the citizens of this ancient town. We should be grateful that "progress" has not yet bulldozed these tightly packed streets, the structures or their way of life. You can also see similar "poverty" in the hill towns of Tuscany, the souks of Syria and the cobbled streets of Old Havana. I guess you must equate soulless glass buildings with prosperity. Sad.

The phrase "The cobalt walls help keep the buildings cool during hot summer days." may not be scientifically valid. Most mud brick walls (which I presume is what these are) have a high thermal mass. So, it aborbs heat slowly but retains it longer. Painting it with a colour that is darker probably only ENHANCES not DIMINISHES its capacity to absorb heat. My personal reasoning for them painting it blue is to make it "easy" on the eyes on a hot dry day. Otherwise, the glare could be quite harmful to the eyes.
