MARDAN: Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday shot dead a policeman at the Machine Kotty Babaini area when he was going to Shergar locality to join a polio team.

Police officials quoted Insar Shah, brother of the deceased, and a student of FG school as saying that he was going along with his brother on motorcycle when unknown motorcyclists shot his brother in the head and fled the scene.

He said that his brother had been assigned duty in Shergar area of Takhtbai tehsil to provide security to a polio team and was on his way to join the team. He said that his brother died instantly.

Mr Shah said that he could not identify the attackers, who fled soon after the attack. The officials of counter-terrorism department have registered an FIR on the complaint of Insar Shah. They said that they had started investigation to ascertain whether it was an incident of terrorism or a result of some personnel enmity.
