ISLAMABAD: President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping departed from Pakistan after a historic two-day visit to the country’s capital.
The Chinese delegation was seen off by high-ranking government and military officials, including President Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and Chief of Army Staff Raheel Sharif.

The Chinese premier's plane will be escorted by JF-17 Thunder fighter jets while it is in Pakistani airspace. The Chinese delegation is scheduled to visit Indonesia next.

In a historic address to the Joint Session of Parliament earlier today, President Jinping hailed Pakistan and China's long-standing ties, saying Islamabad stood by Beijing at a time when it stood isolated on the world stage.
Jinping began his address by extending warm greetings and best wishes to the "brotherly people of Pakistan" on behalf of the 1.3 billion people of China.
"Pakistan and China’s struggles have brought their hearts and minds together," he said, as lawmakers applauded.
He said Beijing and Islamabad have been of tremendous support to one another, saying both countries have stood by each other in times of need. He also referred to the assistance offered by the two countries to one another in the events of natural disasters.
"Pakistan is the first foreign country that I visit this year and [it is my] first visit to your country, but Pakistan is not at all unfamiliar to me," he said.
"It has made tremendous efforts and endured enormous sacrifice."
He also lauded Islamabad's anti-terror efforts, saying Pakistan had shown great character and courage in the face of adversity. "Pakistan has stood on the frontline in the international fight against terrorism," said Jinping. He also announced that his country will provide assistance for the development and reconstruction of federally administered tribal areas (Fata).
President Jinping said he and his colleagues have been overwhelmed with the warm welcome extended to them by Pakistan. "During my current visit, President Mamnoon Hussain, PM Sharif and I jointly agreed to elevate China-Pakistan relations to an all-weather strategic partnership," he said.
He also announced that his country firmly supports Pakistan's commitment to uphold its sovereignty, territorial integrity and national dignity, Radio Pakistan reported.
Discussing the history of Pakistan-China relations, the Chinese President said it is often termed as higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the ocean and sweeter than the honey by the Pakistani brothers while Chinese people refer to Pakistani people as good friends, good partners and good brothers.
He pointed out that Pakistan is one of the first countries which recognised China as a state and it was the first Islamic country to develop diplomatic relations with Beijing.
Xi Jinping said both countries should maintain strategic communication on regional and international issues. He said China supports Pakistan's constructive role in Afghanistan.
He said both the countries share common threats and they should stick together to confront them. He said China will enhance Pakistan's capability in fighting terrorism and meeting non-traditional threats.
Jinping arrived at the Parliament House on Tuesday where he addressed a joint session of the National Assembly (NA) and the Senate on the second and last day of his visit to Pakistan.
An address to parliamentarians has been a feature of all visits to the country by Chinese presidents and prime ministers and it was the fourth such event. However, Mr Xi was the first Chinese president to address a joint sitting of parliament.
Regarded as a historic visit, Jinping's trip to Pakistan is being viewed as one of game-changing proportions with the region’s developing geo-strategic landscape. It comes at a time when Tehran and the west have successfully managed a deal over Iran’s nuclear programme and as Islamabad treads a tricky terrain over its position on the conflict in Yemen.
Ties with New Delhi have not been able to overcome the snags that developed in recent few months and relations with the United States have been relatively lukewarm.

President Mamnoon Hussain hosted a luncheon in honour of the Chinese President Xi Jinping which was also attended by senior military and civil leadership.
During the investiture ceremony, President Mamnoon Hussain conferred upon President Jinping Pakistan's highest civil award, the Nishan -e- Pakistan.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed his gratitude to the Chinese president and his delegation for their visit to Pakistan.
"You are not just a friend from afar, but one who is so close to our heart," he said.

The premier acknowledge Mr Jinping's strong association with Pakistan. "We are friends forever. We are close friends, dear brothers and trusted partners," he said.
He said all political parties of Pakistan have a united stance that Pakistan should have a robust bond with China.
The prime minister reiterated his stance on Pakistan's fight against terrorism. "Our joint efforts against terrorism have succeeded so far but we need to intensify our efforts," he said.
He also appreciated China's solidarity with Pakistan in "our quest for peace and stability in South Asia".
Talking about the mega-project of Pakistan-China Economic Corridor, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said, "It is a catalytic project that will help us combine the geo-economic streams of our countries."
"The corridor symbolises our commitment to create win-win partnerships which threaten none and benefit all," he further said.
The premier said young entrepreneurs, academics, media persons, teachers, students and professionals from both countries will sustain their friendship and make it even more productive.
After the joint session concluded, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and President Xi Jinping departed for the Presidency in a horse-drawn carriage where President Mamnoon Hussain is to host a luncheon in Mr Jinping's honour.

NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq officially thanked the Chinese president and his delegation for visiting Pakistan and their commitment for the prosperity of Pakistan's economy. He referred to President Jinping's visit as "a brother's homecoming".

Speaker NA Ayaz Sadiq welcomed the Chinese delegation and appreciated China's support in Pakistan's fight against terrorism.
The Chinese president said Pakistan and China's friendship is transforming into a strategic partnership for the sake of mutual benefit.
In light of today's joint session, galleries of the House have been divided into nine sections.
Lawmakers, senior government officials and Chief of Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif are present in the Parliament House for the occasion.

Prior to addressing the joint session, Jinping inaugurated the Solar Power Generation System (SPGS), a 1.2MW project for providing electricity to the Parliament building through solar energy as a present from the Chinese government to Pakistan.
After the completion of the project the Pakistani parliament will be the only parliament building in the world to go green.

@dadas China has committed 20 billion USD to India, and India and China both alleges each other of invading their territories during Xi Jinping visit, and the visit failed. So far the investment is not materialized as there is trust deficit between India and China.
Pakistan and China friendship is based on mutual trust, and is time tested. Both has not abandoned each other in the worst of times.

@dadas Chinese, like most other investors are waiting for democracy to strengthen in Pakistan, for corruption to be minimized, for policies to be long term-based. Once we get close to these targets, more investment will flow in. The reason why China is doing so is that unique geographical location of Pakistan. For Western and much of Central China, economic corridor of Pakistan is the most viable option. The costs of other routes are too high and in some cases not possible. In the larger game USD 35 billion is peanuts, its only the beginning, it is just set to grow.

@dadas India is 7 times bigger than Pakistan so that needs to be kept in mind. And we cannot simply compare one country with the other. This is not like a rich man, out on the streets, distributing clothes and food to the poor children. This is sovereign nations working in a way that can best help them coexist in a constructive way to create, yet again, a bipolar world.
And the way this help will be utilised is of significance too. I hope it brings happiness for Pakistan and India. And allow them to prosper cohesively as Belgium and Holland, Canada and America and other economically and politically advanced countries do. Long live Peace

@dadas Pakistan is geographically and in terms of complexity a lot smaller than India. 30 billion dollars for India may just be a droplet whereas 40 billion dollars for Pakistan is equivalent to a bucket. You have the weigh the importance proportionally. Plus, its not as much about money as it is about long term impact of the proposed project. This project has huge significance in that it is one of the only deep sea ports on the Indian Ocean Side and will bring business to Pakistani harbours. Its direct access for china to the rest of the world and Pakistan getting royalties from it.

It is a unnatural tie, any time it may bracks. Pakistan is a theologic country based on strong dose of Islamic fundamentalism,where in China is a comunist country which sloly and suely becoming a moderate country. Though China is not favour any religious jeolot, but. there is a very strong infulance of Buddhism and confusism. Both do not accept or parise Islamic fundamentalism.
so the tie is purely is oppoetunistic.
When India engaged with Pakistan on Bangladesh in 1971, China did not help Pakistan.

We all must understand, this is Chinese investment NOT Aide, as a lot of our friends of India would like to think. Pakistan should actually refuse aide from any country and encourage investments and technical assistance only. The main problem with US aide is not really its overall size compared to current China package. The two key issues with US are (1) a large percentage of the aide finds its way back to the donor (US in this case) via various consultants, NGO's. Not even going into another debate of politicians making money in such deals also sending it back to the western countries. Also to note that "expansion of US embassy and its conversion into a fortress" is also considered part of US Aide package; and (2) the aide has no strategic value as already highlighted above. Meaning no singly mega power project with US stamp or no major highway etc etc. Apart from these two points,US its seems does not really consider Pakistan as its long term ally, unlike in case of India or Israel.

@ DADAS Investing in India is in the interest of china since india is the largest market of the world. And a manufacturer like China cannot ignore it. China has commited you 35 billion $, which is a very small amount relative to your population. You have alot of mouths to feed. We recognize India as a great regional power, but why does its government not realize the importance of finding a lasting solution to the issues outstanding between the two neighbors for over six decades. India rightfully aspires to become a permanent member of the Security Council, but has been ignoring the commitments it made and the obligations it has as a responsible state, to do justice to the people of Kashmir, by holding a free and fair plebiscite on the Kashmir issue! The two states should learn to live as peaceful neighbors, and be an example in this regard to the rest of the world!

The state has been pushing militancy and ameliorating situation in the country which is, no doubt, associated with CPEC. Pakistan must also keep in mind that China can have alternate option (Iran) if the security situation in the country remains unstable. Hypocrisy should have no place. As there are rumors of change of route. This will definitely harm the interests of Pakistan. As Shahbaz Sharif has been nominated as focal person. This is not positive thinking on part of the government. Balochis should be on the front with regards to CPEC. Therefore there was no need to select SS as focal person rather Balochsitan chief minister should have been a focal person considering relevancy of the project. So these are flaws in the current government's policy which must be fixed. Because you cannot take something to a logical conclusion based on malicious political ambitions.

@dadas I totally agree with you, firstly for India it was $20billion, but thats not the point. We should have this kind of investment in 1990s. China has invested 100s of billions USD in Latin america, and Africa in oil and gas, energy and infrastructure. But mostely it was for their futur oil and gas needs. Now there is no more big projects in those continents so China finally looking at pakistan.
It's not entirely China's fault. Musharraf goverment was quite pro American which China didnt like. Zardari govment was totally bad and currupt government, And US presence in Afghanistan destablised Pakistan. So no matter how good brother you are, you still will see if you can get your money back and will not invest in such war like situation and destable country. So China waited till US mostly left Afghanistan, PAK controlled a lot of FATA areas and China now feel much safter to invest.
Even rich Arabs hasn't invested much at all though they ask Pak to defend them.

Any two countries enjoying good relations is good news always. It is however important to analyse the reasons though. China wants to maintain their status as a regional super power, which they realize is being lost bit by bit every year to India. From an international relationship point of view they lost it to India long back with the only other large Communist nation, Russia also being firmly on India's side. Pakistan will support anyone and anything that is against India, so they're the easiest partners. If China has so much of love, friendship and warmth towards the people of Pakistan, why don't they offer visas on arrival for Pakistanis in China?

Some people are confusing Chinese investment of $46 Billion to "Aid". Unlike, the US which provides "Aid" to Pakistan, China is "Investing" in Pakistan in various projects. There is a difference between aid and investment. Unlike the large amount of this aid from the US which goes to the Pak Military, investment from China is for long term infrastructure projects which will impact the lives of millions of Pak citizens.

Remember, the $10 billion memorandums of understanding that Benazir Government had signed with various governments! Pakistan must now also start drilling for oil in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. A few rigs should be commissioned. Recommend we use Transocean Ltd. I am certain we are going to find oil soon in Pakistan.

@Sunil our Pakistani friends are on a high today. Wonder how the Chinese feel about them in China. Well, one thing they obviously fail to realise about India-China political relations is that they remain tenuous due to the defeat India suffered in 1962 in the Himalayas; the land grab the Chinese did; the irredentist claims it makes vis-a-vis all states in China sea etc. Therefore, despite a USD 70 billion trade between us neither our governments nor our people love each other. Our territorial and economic differential too makes Indians quite resentful, and it'll be a while before we can ever catch up, if catch we ever can. But as neighbours we trade and compete while we talk. The 36 Rafale jets off the shelf are part of the order or some 144 earlier planned and are required for India's eastern borders. But Pakistanis go ballistic even as India goes about strengthening its eastern defence. There is too much economics on the mind of the Indian leadership than military adventure...

Pakistan has finally understood the trick that it should have good relations with the neighbors and in the region first and then it should look outside. It has now developed good relations with Afghanistan, It sided with Iran on the Yemen issue, it has got excellent relations with China, strategic friendship with Sri Lanka, etc.
I hope India learns from it, India has strange relations with Pak, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It is making friendship with Israel and US ans in the region all countries hate us. Please learn from Pakistan.

China is not a thankless country. It was of course Pakistan that opened the China Gate to the world. Even, the first commercial jet air plane was provided by Pakistan. And, the eighth modern engineering wonder of the world called "Silk Route" was the fruit of a 25 years of untiring effort of China and Pakistan.

@dadas it-s not only the figure you must also be able to put all the money in work, India is bigger and have few years lead in foregien investments. if those project signed works out well there will be possibilties to doubble the nummbers.

Will this investment come with chinese managers and their families ? will they be the managers and the hands will be pakistani locals ? Bear in mind if most of the investments are of technical nature , im rather sure the managers and chiefs will be chnese and the underlings will be the locals ..
Xi spent 2 days in pakistan for 46 Billion deals compared with 3 day visit to india with 20 B in deals , hmmmm ...sounds fishy to me ....
sounds like in india it was real negotiations but in pakistan it was a one-way street, the chinese dictated terms to them
in pakistan the Chinese are saying this is what we are bringing in and this is how it will go , and all that was required of the pakistanis is to say yes ! fine ! yes ! ( with COAS saluting in the background )
if so , good luck with the chinese ..... if these deals are for real it shouldnt be long , say, one year from now we shall know how it's going ! ...best wishes.

All the MoU/projects (51+) signed by Pakistan and China, if closely studied shall benefit Punjab only. There is no mention of benefit to Khyber, or Sindh provinces. After the Gwadar will be using the gas from Nawabshah (Sindh).

China is an old and battle tested friend. However, how shameful have we become as a nation that we cant survive without a begging bowl in our hand. We have surrendered our sovereignty, independence and self respect to "Our friends" (aka "our masters") whether it be America, Saudi Arabia or China. When will we break the begging bowl, stand up on our own feet, and rise as a truly independent nation. My heart says "soon" but my head says "not for a while".

Being an Indian I must say that I am glad to see this token of friendship offered to Pakistan from China.
Yes,there are some territorial disputes between India and China/Pakistan but India needs to press for regional harmony and friendshiolp too.Disputes can be solved by dialogue.
It is high time we start treating the whole world as a big family and only work together to the development of South Asia as a whole.
Again congratulations to both my Chinese and Pakistani brothers.

I had asked a very pertinent question yesterday which was not published.. I will ask once more.. Could someone enumerate on the nature of this 40 billion USD package... How much of this is actually AID and how much of this is project funding which is repayable at an certain exchange rate and with certain interest charges.
Also, is Pakistan obliged to use Chinese Contractors and Suppliers for sourcing material and labour for utilizing these lines of credit, which is basically means Pakistani is being forced to import Chinese goods and services as China is the only country offering a Credit line at the moment.

India made China a permanent member of the UN ( Those who do not believe can check the facts). Pakistan was busy buying arms and accommodating US troops in Afghanistan for many decades, where was China during that period? Your enemy is our friend.. it was only after Indo- china war of 1962 that Pakistan poured in its love for India's enemy. I don't understand the Pakistan's history of begging based relationship.. on one hand it takes money from USA and now China. Remember beggars don't have choices!

@farooqi COAS is everywhere nowadays because he is our de facto foreign minister. In the parliament because the GHQ boys are keeping an eye on our elected leaders and us. This is all being spun as a COAS achievement but in 5 years when people see nothing has been achieved the same spin masters will blame the civilians for failed security policy.
I hope some of these upbeat COAS pilgrims will read Cyril Almeida excellent opinion analysis piece in Dawn on this Chinese investment myth.
